Every HD, IP or 4K system is specified after a free survey, with remote viewing and recording you can rely on as evidence.
Thousands of premises secured since 2017
Start with what you need to see at each part of the premises. The equipment follows the brief.
Define the view at doors and approaches, then assess camera position, lighting and the detail needed. Resolution alone does not establish a useful view.
Discuss the purpose of each internal view, obstructions and the way the space is used. The survey establishes suitable positions and recording requirements.
Consider movement, stopping points, lighting and the difference between an overview and a dedicated detail view. Specialist plate capture is a separate requirement.
Discuss perimeter coverage, detection conditions and the agreed response. Thermal or analytics functions are specified where suitable, not assumed for every system.
Camera positions, recording and response arrangements are established during your site survey.
These are different design decisions. A system may combine several of them.
Network cameras support a new or expanded IP system. HD analogue and HD-CVI options may make use of suitable existing coaxial cabling, subject to the survey and equipment compatibility.
4K and other resolutions are specified around the view you need. Camera position, lens, light, motion and recording settings all affect the result.
Thermal cameras and dedicated number-plate capture address particular requirements. Their suitability and any connected action depend on the selected equipment and site conditions.
Temporary sites can need a different power, communications and mounting arrangement. Agree the infrastructure and monitoring requirements before installation.
From the free survey through to ongoing care, the work follows the agreed design.
Agree the purpose, camera positions and practical constraints.
Set out the camera, recording and network requirements.
Fit and connect the agreed equipment at the premises.

Shop floors, stock areas and loading points.
Working areas, yards and boundaries.
Changing layouts and temporary requirements.
Approaches, entrances and outbuildings.
Buildings, access points and out-of-hours use.
Sensitive premises and carefully defined purposes.
Public premises and project-specific requirements.
Operating a CCTV system brings legal responsibilities under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018. Advanced Overwatch helps you meet these obligations:
Audio is a separate decision from video, and a stricter one. The ICO expects any capability to record sound to be switched off by default, so if your cameras carry microphones, read our guide on CCTV audio recording in the workplace before it is enabled.
Maintenance can include camera cleaning, connection and recording checks, relevant firmware work and review of the installation. Support and callout arrangements are set out in your agreement.
Discuss system-health monitoring and upgrades where supported. No system can be guaranteed to remain fault-free.

Fixed cameras are enough for the great majority of commercial premises, and PTZ cameras are worth the extra cost only for specific situations: large open areas, perimeters, or sites where an operator needs to actively follow movement rather than simply record a set field of view.
A fixed camera continuously records the same field of view, which is exactly what’s needed to cover a defined area such as a shop entrance, a till point, a loading bay door or an office corridor. Because the coverage never changes, a fixed camera guarantees that area is recorded at all times, and multiple fixed cameras are usually the more cost-effective way to cover several distinct points of interest across a site. A PTZ camera can be panned, tilted and zoomed, either automatically on a preset patrol pattern or manually by an operator, which makes it well suited to covering a large open yard, a car park, a farm perimeter or a construction site where a single camera needs to survey a wide area and then zoom in on something specific, such as a vehicle registration or a person near a boundary fence. The trade-off is that a PTZ camera can only look at one place at a time. If it’s zoomed in on one corner of a yard, it isn’t simultaneously recording detail elsewhere, so relying on PTZ alone for full-site coverage can leave genuine gaps compared with several well-placed fixed cameras.
In practice, most Northern Ireland retail units, offices and warehouses are properly covered with fixed cameras at entrances, tills, stock areas and exits, since these are known, unchanging points that simply need continuous recorded coverage. Larger commercial sites, farms, and construction or perimeter applications tend to benefit from a mix, fixed cameras on entrances and fixed points, with one or more PTZ units covering open ground or a perimeter where an operator may need to actively track movement.
Advanced Overwatch specifies the right mix of fixed and PTZ cameras for each site during a free survey, based on layout and what actually needs covering rather than defaulting to either option. Advanced Overwatch is SSAIB certificated (NIRE127) specifically for Intruder Alarm Systems, Visual Surveillance Systems (VSS) and Access Control Systems. A proper commercial CCTV maintenance contract should include scheduled preventative visits, remote health monitoring, a guaranteed fault response time, firmware and software updates, and clear terms on what’s covered versus chargeable, not just a vague promise to “fix it if it breaks.”
Scheduled visits should cover lens cleaning, housing and cable checks, and camera realignment, since dirty lenses or a knocked camera can quietly ruin footage quality for weeks before anyone notices. Remote health monitoring matters just as much: a good contract alerts your installer if a camera goes offline, storage fills up, or a recording device fails, so faults are caught before you actually need footage that turns out not to exist. Ask about response times for call-outs, particularly if your system is used for insurance purposes or as evidence after an incident, and get this in writing rather than as a verbal promise. Because modern CCTV systems are IP-connected devices on your network, ask whether firmware and cybersecurity updates are included, since unpatched cameras are a genuine vulnerability, not just a picture-quality issue.
Finally, get clarity on what’s included versus chargeable: whether hard drive or storage replacement is covered, whether cabling repairs are included, and how out-of-hours call-outs are priced. A contract that’s vague on these points tends to generate disputes exactly when you need the system working most.
Advanced Overwatch designs, installs and maintains commercial CCTV systems across Northern Ireland and offers maintenance contracts covering preventative visits, remote monitoring and fault response. IP CCTV cameras transmit digital video over a network cable or Wi-Fi connection, while HD analogue cameras (including HDCVI, HDTVI, and AHD variants) send video over traditional coaxial cable. Both can produce high-quality footage, but they differ significantly in flexibility, scalability, and feature depth.
IP CCTV is the recommended choice for most Northern Ireland businesses installing a new system. IP cameras offer higher maximum resolutions up to 4K and beyond, built-in AI analytics such as line-crossing detection, vehicle recognition, and intrusion alerts, and straightforward remote access over the internet from any device. New cabling uses standard Cat5e or Cat6 network cable, which is faster and easier to install than coaxial. Additional cameras can be added to the network at any time without replacing the recorder.
Power over Ethernet (PoE) is an IP-only advantage: a single Cat5e cable carries both data and power to each camera, removing the need for separate power supplies at each camera point and simplifying installation significantly.
HD analogue is most appropriate as an upgrade path for premises that already have coaxial cable in place. Rather than replacing the cabling infrastructure, a site can fit new HD analogue cameras and a compatible recorder to achieve a substantial resolution improvement at lower cost than a full IP replacement. Current HD analogue systems support up to approximately 8MP (4K analogue), while IP systems offer higher ceiling resolutions and more intelligent features.
For new installations and system expansions across Northern Ireland, Advanced Overwatch recommends IP CCTV using Hikvision or Dahua cameras on a PoE NVR. We are SSAIB certificated (NIRE127), ISO 9001, 14001, 27001 and 45001 certified. Call 028 7087 8077 or visit our contact page for a free survey.
CCTV camera resolution is one of the most practical buying decisions for any business, and the right choice depends on what you need to capture and at what distance. There is no single correct answer, but the following guide covers the most common applications for businesses across Northern Ireland.
2-megapixel cameras (1080p Full HD) are the standard resolution for general area surveillance. They provide clear, detailed footage for most indoor and outdoor areas where the camera is positioned within eight to twelve metres of the area of interest. A typical application would be monitoring a shop floor, warehouse interior, corridor, or office space. For many small and medium-sized businesses, 2MP cameras across most of the site will meet their needs entirely.
4-megapixel cameras (2K resolution) offer noticeably sharper images and allow more useful digital zoom when reviewing recorded footage. They are well suited to building entrances, reception desks, cash handling areas, loading bays, and car parks where identifying individuals or vehicles at a greater distance is important. The additional detail in a 4MP image often makes the difference between footage that is useful as evidence and footage that is not.
8-megapixel cameras (4K Ultra HD) are specified where maximum detail is required, such as capturing number plates in a car park, identifying facial features at entrance points, or monitoring large outdoor perimeters. They also future-proof your installation if you expect your security requirements to increase.
Storage requirements increase with resolution, so system design should balance image quality against recorder capacity and retention period. Advanced Overwatch specifies camera resolution based on your site survey, coverage objectives, and storage budget, not on whichever product has the highest margin. SSAIB certificated (NIRE127), ISO 9001, 14001, 27001 and 45001 certified. Visit our contact page to arrange a free site survey.
Yes, remote mobile access is a standard feature on modern IP CCTV systems, and it is one of the most requested capabilities by business owners across Northern Ireland. With the right system in place, you can view live camera feeds and recorded footage from anywhere using a smartphone, tablet, or laptop.
How it works: your CCTV recorder, whether a network video recorder (NVR) or an IP camera with cloud storage, connects to your business broadband. Manufacturer apps such as Hikvision’s Hik-Connect or Dahua’s DMSS give you secure, encrypted access to the system remotely. Through these apps you can view live and recorded footage, receive motion-triggered push notifications, and, on some systems, trigger outputs such as deterrent lights or audible warnings.
For reliable remote access, your business broadband connection needs to be stable. Many businesses ask about static IP addresses, which make configuration simpler, but modern apps using dynamic DNS also work well without one. Advanced Overwatch configures remote access and tests it as standard on every IP CCTV installation we complete. Before we leave site, we walk you through the app so you can access your system with confidence from day one.
On the GDPR question: remote CCTV access is fully compatible with UK GDPR compliance, provided you store footage responsibly, restrict app access to authorised users only, and have appropriate signage in place at your premises. We advise on all of this as part of the installation.

The number of CCTV cameras a business needs typically ranges from 4 to 16, depending on the size of your premises, the number of entry points, and the areas requiring constant visibility. A small retail unit or office in Northern Ireland with a single entrance, a sales floor, and a rear exit would generally be well protected by 4 to 6 cameras. A larger commercial site, warehouse, or multi-unit premises will need considerably more.
Rather than estimating, a professional site survey is the only reliable way to determine the right camera count for your specific property. At Advanced Overwatch, every installation begins with a free, no-obligation survey. Our engineers from an SSAIB certificated company assess your layout, lighting conditions, blind spots, and entry points before recommending a camera configuration. This prevents the two most common mistakes: under-specifying a system that leaves dangerous blind spots, or over-specifying and paying for cameras that deliver no real security value.
Key factors that influence camera count include the number of doors, gates, and pedestrian access points; the size and layout of any car park or yard; internal areas requiring monitoring such as server rooms, stock rooms, or cash-handling areas; after-hours security requirements; and whether you need automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), which requires dedicated higher-resolution cameras positioned specifically for that purpose.
Advanced Overwatch is SSAIB certificated (NIRE127) and ISO 9001, 14001, 27001 and 45001 certified. Visit our contact page to arrange a free site survey and camera count assessment for your business.
Most residential installations complete within a single day. Larger commercial systems, or properties requiring significant cable runs through walls or across multiple floors, may take two to three days. We agree a programme with you before starting, so the disruption to your home or business is planned and limited.
In most cases, domestic CCTV cameras do not require planning permission. However, if cameras point beyond your property boundary, cover a public footpath or road, or form part of a larger external structure, you may need approval from your local council. Properties in conservation areas or on the listed buildings register are subject to additional restrictions. As part of the free site survey, we advise on any planning considerations relevant to your property.
