Hospitality Security Systems in Northern Ireland

Hotels, bars, restaurants and nightclubs trade late, employ seasonally and fill a building with a public who have been drinking. Here is how we specify CCTV, access control and monitored response for licensed premises across Northern Ireland.

Security systems built around
a licensed premises.

Guests, staff, stock and late trading each place different demands on the system. Plan the camera views, controlled doors and response arrangements around the way the venue operates.

We have looked after the hospitality trade across Northern Ireland since 2017, from Beresford House in Coleraine, with our own engineers. This page sits under Sectors, beside commercial security.

Areas to plan together

  • Entrances, queues and camera views after dark
  • Staff doors, stores and guest corridors
  • Tills, stock review and requests for footage
  • Monitoring and the agreed response after close

CCTV your licence and the PSNI will stand over

Two permissions matter, from different places. The liquor licence comes from the county court. The entertainment licence for music and dancing comes from your district council under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Northern Ireland) Order 1985, and that is where the CCTV conditions are usually written.

Conditions vary by council but the shape repeats: cover on every entrance, the servery, the dance floor, the smoking area and the queue outside, plus footage police can open anywhere. We specify around identification distance, not camera count. See CCTV installation.

Staff doors, cellars and guest floors

Most of what goes missing leaves by a door that was never meant to be open. Cellars, spirit stores, the office and the back yard need locking properly, and keys stop being a control once they reach seasonal staff.

Card or fob entry removes a leaver in seconds instead of rekeying, and shows who opened the store at four in the morning. In a hotel it keeps the public out of guest corridors, and doors held on an access system release on an alarm condition.

Nightclubs, queues and body worn cameras

A late venue carries problems a restaurant does not. The crowd leaves in one lump, the queue stands on somebody else’s footpath, and the incidents that reach a court file happen at the edges: smoking area, taxi rank, side lane.

So coverage goes past the front door, onto the queue and the dispersal route, with cameras chosen for low light and crowds. Panic buttons behind the bar sit on the intruder system.

Body worn video covers the two minutes ceiling cameras miss. We do not supply door staff. We supply the kit and the discipline around it: a dock, separate storage, and a rule on who may review it.

Stock loss, tills and internal theft

Ask any operator where the money goes and the answers repeat: short measures rung as full, voids after close, drinks poured for friends. A camera alone will not show it, because staff at a till look the same.

CCTV can help review activity around tills and cash-handling areas. Where a pattern is suspected, our theft investigation service reviews the available evidence. Tell staff about monitoring first.

When a patron asks for the footage

A venue recording the public is a data controller, and the requests arrive: a customer who fell, a patron who wants the row at the bar. You have a month to answer.

Footage of one person in a busy bar contains twenty, so the rest are obscured before release. We run a CCTV video redaction service and can write the CCTV policy you answer against. See CCTV compliance.

Monitoring, and a keyholder at three in the morning

The activation comes after close, when the building holds a full week of stock and nobody is in it. A bells only system depends on a stranger hearing it and caring enough to act.

Intruder alarm monitoring is provided through our monitoring partner’s NSI Gold certified Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). Your cameras are watched in our own 24-hour CCTV Monitoring Control Room. Response follows what you agreed: a call list, camera verification, and keyholding rather than a duty manager driving back into town. More on monitoring.

Certification scope, stated plainly

Advanced Overwatch is SSAIB certificated (NIRE127) specifically for Intruder Alarm Systems, Visual Surveillance Systems (VSS) and Access Control Systems. Body worn cameras and till systems sit outside it. We are also certified to ISO 9001, 14001, 27001 and 45001.

Hospitality security systems questions

The period comes from the conditions on your entertainment licence, so it is set locally rather than nationally. We size the recorder for it and set it to overwrite.

In practice you need to be able to, quickly, in a format that plays without your own software. We set the export up at handover and train staff on it.

Yes, and it is often one of the more useful cameras, because trouble starts there rather than inside. It is not a toilet or a changing area, where cameras never go.

They are entitled to the footage they appear in, not to everyone beside them, so other faces are obscured first. We do that redaction, inside the month you have.

Yes. Signage at the entrance, a line in your CCTV policy, and door staff who say the camera is recording. It is then kept and released like your other footage.

One team, independently audited

No franchise and no call centre in another country. The engineers who survey your venue are the ones who maintain it.

Talk to us about your venue.

Send us your licence conditions, or tell us what keeps going wrong. An engineer will walk the premises with you, outside trading hours if that suits, and put it in writing. Call 028 7087 8077.
