Access control in Coleraine, run from an office in the town

Advanced Overwatch installs access control systems in Coleraine from an office in the town, at 1st Floor, Beresford House, 2 Beresford Road, BT52 1GE. We fit card, fob, keypad and video door entry for shops, offices, schools, apartment blocks, farms and industrial units. Advanced Overwatch is SSAIB certificated (NIRE127) specifically for Intruder Alarm Systems, Visual Surveillance Systems (VSS) and Access Control Systems. Every job begins with a free survey and a fixed quote after that survey.

Access control is a different question from an alarm or a camera. An alarm tells you somebody got in. A camera tells you afterwards who it was. Access control decides, door by door and hour by hour, who is allowed through in the first place, and leaves a dated record of every opening. On most Coleraine buildings that is the control people actually wanted when they asked about security.

We design to BS EN 60839-11-1, the British Standard for electronic access control systems, and we hand the system over with the door hardware, the escape route release and the user list all tested in front of you.

This is our home town. Advanced Overwatch works from 1st Floor, Beresford House, 2 Beresford Road, Coleraine BT52 1GE, and covers the whole of Northern Ireland from here. If you are in Coleraine, we are minutes away rather than a region away.

What the police figures say about entry in Coleraine

Our Crime in My Area page for Coleraine publishes Police Service of Northern Ireland figures through the UK Police open data service. In July 2026 it records 241 crimes within a mile of Coleraine town centre. Only three of those were burglaries. Anti social behaviour accounted for 97, violence and sexual offences for 76, criminal damage and arson for 27 and shoplifting for 11. Across the whole settlement in the same month PSNI recorded 294 incidents.

The wider picture on the same page comes from the NISRA recorded crime tables. Across all of Coleraine, taken from the electoral wards that cover the town, police recorded 1,872 crimes in 2025/26, up 10.5% on 2024/25. In the Causeway Coast and Glens council area, burglary at business and community premises rose 20.6 per cent year on year to 41 offences, while residential burglary fell 17.0 per cent to 112.

Read together, those numbers argue for controlled entry rather than heavier locks. Forced entry into a Coleraine building is rare. The recurring problem is somebody reaching a part of a building they were never meant to reach: the stockroom behind a shop floor, the staff corridor, the plant room, the shared hallway in a converted town centre building where five different tenants have the same front door key.

The doors we are asked about around Coleraine

Coleraine is a compact town with a very mixed building stock, and the door problem changes completely from one street to the next.

The town centre. The Diamond, Church Street, New Row and the streets running off them are mostly older buildings with retail at street level and offices or flats above. They often share one street door and one stair. That is the classic case for video door entry on the street door and a fob reader on each tenant landing, so a delivery driver reaches the right buzzer and nobody else gets past the hall.

Retail and the retail park. Units at Riverside Retail Park and along the ring road need the public in through the front and nobody through the goods door. A single fob reader on the rear staff entrance, with the code or credential cancelled the day somebody leaves, does more for stock loss than another camera.

Student and shared housing. The Ulster University campus on the Cromore Road pulls shared houses through the Portstewart Road, Mountsandel Road and the streets around Railway Place. Where a landlord is handing out keys to a changing group every September, a fob system that can cancel one credential without rekeying the house is the practical answer.

Industrial and trade units. Loughanhill Industrial Estate and the units along the Bushmills Road tend to need a small number of doors done properly: the pedestrian door beside the roller shutter, the office, the parts store, and often a gate.

Farms and rural premises. Out toward Macosquin, Articlave and Garvagh the buildings are spread out and running cable between them is rarely proportionate. Wireless and mechatronic locking, which replaces the lock barrel rather than the door, is usually the sensible route.

Escape doors, and the part that gets missed

Any door on an escape route has to let people out when the fire alarm goes off and when the power fails. An access control system must never be able to hold somebody inside. We design that release to BS 7273-4, the code of practice for the actuation of door release mechanisms, and we test every escape door in front of you at handover.

In practice that means deciding, door by door, whether a lock is fail safe, releasing on loss of power, or fail secure, staying locked. It means a green break glass unit on the escape side where the standard calls for one, and it means the fire alarm interface being proved rather than assumed. In Northern Ireland the duty for fire safety sits with the appropriate person under the Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 and the Fire Safety Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010. This is general guidance, not legal advice, and your fire risk assessment is the document that decides.

Cards, fobs, PINs and video entry, and when each is right

For access control, Advanced Overwatch is a certified partner and installer for Paxton.

Card and fob. The default for anywhere with more than a couple of people. Each person carries their own credential, so one lost fob is cancelled in seconds instead of rekeying a building, and you get a dated record of who opened what. We install Paxton Net2 and Switch2, the platforms most commonly found in Northern Irish commercial premises.

Keypad and PIN. Suits a low traffic door where there is no need to know which individual went through: a store, a plant room, a back gate. The limitation is worth saying out loud. A shared code cannot be withdrawn from one person without changing it for everybody.

Video door entry. The right answer on apartment blocks, on trade counters and anywhere somebody works alone and needs to see a caller before releasing the door.

Wireless and mechatronic locking. For older town centre buildings and for outbuildings where routing new cable would mean lifting floors or trenching a yard, an electronic cylinder replaces the existing barrel and keeps the audit trail without the cabling.

We will say at survey when the cheaper option is the right one. If a fob reader on two doors does what you need, we are not going to specify a biometric reader, which brings special category data under UK GDPR and a data protection impact assessment with it.

How access control fits with the rest of your Coleraine system

Access control is most useful when it is not on its own. A door opening tags the camera covering that door, so a vague report about somebody in the stockroom becomes a named credential and a timestamped clip. An intruder alarm that knows a valid credential was used at 06:40 raises fewer pointless activations.

If you are looking at more than one part of the system, the matching Coleraine pages are CCTV installation in Coleraine and burglar alarm installation in Coleraine, and the full service detail sits on our access control page. If a system needs somebody to attend out of hours, keyholding and vacant property covers that.

Access control in Coleraine, your questions

Yes. Coleraine is our home town. Advanced Overwatch works from 1st Floor, Beresford House, 2 Beresford Road, Coleraine BT52 1GE. Advanced Overwatch is SSAIB certificated (NIRE127) specifically for Intruder Alarm Systems, Visual Surveillance Systems (VSS) and Access Control Systems. Call 028 7087 8077 or book a free survey.

It depends on the number of doors, the reader type, the door hardware already fitted and whether usable cabling exists, so we will not put a figure on it blind. You get a fixed quote after a free survey, in writing, before any work starts, and you are free to walk away at that point.

They keep working as escape doors. We design the release to BS 7273-4, so the door releases when the fire alarm activates and when power is lost, with a green break glass unit on the escape side where the standard calls for one. Every escape door is tested in front of you at handover.

Usually, yes, and usually without lifting floors. Electronic cylinders and wireless locking replace the existing lock barrel rather than the door, which suits the older buildings around The Diamond, Church Street and New Row where running new cable would be disruptive and expensive.

Yes. Networked systems let one person add, remove or restrict a credential across every linked door from a single platform, so a business with a unit in Coleraine and another elsewhere is not managing two separate lists.

Often, yes. We survey what is there first and tell you honestly whether it is worth maintaining, upgrading or replacing. If the panel is obsolete and parts are no longer made we will say so rather than sell you a maintenance contract on it.
