Burglary in Coleraine, what the long record actually shows

Most alarm sales copy leans on fear. The record for this town does not support it, and we would rather you saw the real numbers before deciding what you need.

Our Crime in My Area page for Coleraine carries the NISRA recorded crime series for the whole town, summed from the eight electoral wards that cover Coleraine. Burglary across the town has fallen a long way over the series: 372 offences in 2001/02, 132 in 2015/16, 39 in 2024/25 and 28 in 2025/26. All recorded crime across the town, by contrast, was 1,872 offences in 2025/26, up 10.5 per cent on the year and up 1.5 per cent on 2015/16, so the fall is specific to burglary rather than a general improvement.

The council area tables on the same page add the part that matters if you run a business. In Causeway Coast and Glens in 2025/26, residential burglary fell 17.0 per cent to 112 offences, but burglary at business and community premises rose 20.6 per cent to 41, and vehicle offences rose 80.6 per cent to 177. Residents surveyed in 2023/24 for the Northern Ireland Safe Community Telephone Survey put worry about burglary at 6 per cent, below the Northern Ireland average of 8 per cent.

Read plainly: a Coleraine house is far less likely to be burgled than it was a decade ago, while business premises and vehicles are moving the other way. That should change what you spend money on, and it is the conversation we have at survey.

Detection, signalling, and somebody who actually acts

An alarm is three separate things, and people usually buy the first one and assume the other two.

Detection is what notices. Contacts on doors and accessible windows, movement detection inside, shock or vibration sensing where forced entry is the risk, and external detection where the approach matters more than the door.

Signalling is how anybody finds out. A bell only system tells whoever is within earshot. A monitored system reports to an alarm receiving centre over broadband, mobile or both. On a property where nobody is within earshot, a louder sounder is not the upgrade. The signalling is.

Response is what then happens. The centre verifies the signal and contacts keyholders or, where the system is configured and registered for it, the police. Police response in Northern Ireland depends on the system meeting the required standard and on false alarm performance, which is why commissioning and annual servicing are part of the same job.

If you would rather not be the person driving to a premises at three in the morning, that is what keyholding and vacant property is for, and 24/7 alarm and CCTV monitoring covers the watching side.

Grades under BS EN 50131, and the grade your insurer names

Intruder alarms are graded by the level of intruder the system is designed to resist, under BS EN 50131 with PD 6662 as the application guide. Grade 2 suits most homes and lower risk small premises. Grade 3 is the usual expectation for commercial premises, retail holding stock or cash overnight and higher value residential. Grade 4 is specialist.

The grade is not decoration. It changes the detection specification, the tamper protection, the standby power and the signalling. If an insurer or a lease names a grade, the certificate we issue on completion is the document that proves what was installed. Certificated installation can support insurance compliance and may be a condition of cover under some policies, so read your own policy wording rather than taking anyone’s word for it.

We do not quote a grade over the phone. It comes out of the survey, and the price is a fixed quote after that free survey.

The Ulster University campus on the Cromore Road gives Coleraine a large stock of shared houses through the Portstewart Road, Mountsandel Road and the streets around them, and a shared house is a genuinely awkward alarm job.

The problem is not detection. It is who can set and unset the system, and what happens in September when the tenants change. A shared code that has been passed round three intakes is not a code, and a system four people are afraid of setting off is a system nobody sets.

What usually works is individual user codes rather than one house code, so a code can be removed when a tenant leaves without changing it for everybody, and an event log that shows which code was used and when. Where a landlord is not on site, monitored signalling matters more than the sounder, because the person who needs to know is not in the house.

Where the same landlord wants controlled entry as well as detection, access control in Coleraine covers the doors.

Out toward Macosquin, Articlave, Garvagh and the Bann valley the valuables are rarely in the house. They are quads, tools, batteries, fuel, GPS units and machinery, sitting in a shed well away from anyone who might hear a bell.

On properties like that we normally detect at the outbuildings rather than only at the dwelling, site external sounders where they can be heard from a road rather than where the cable is convenient, and cover the approach on a long lane, because a detector at the shed door triggers when somebody is already at the machinery. Where trenching cable between buildings would be disproportionate we use wireless devices or radio links, and we prove the signal strength at survey rather than assume it from a farm plan.

Coleraine sits ten minutes from Portstewart and Portrush, and a large amount of property in the area is empty for long stretches: second homes, seasonal lets, and business units that shut down over the winter.

An unmonitored bell on an empty house on a quiet road achieves very little. The parts that earn their place are monitored signalling, so an activation reaches somebody whether or not you are in the county, individual codes for cleaners and changeovers, and a keyholding arrangement so somebody attends and you are not asking a neighbour to walk into a building.

If the property is let out, the same rule as the student houses applies: a code shared with everybody is a code that protects nobody.

An alarm tells you something happened. It does not show you what, and it does not decide who was allowed in. On most Coleraine properties it works alongside the other two, and the matching pages are CCTV installation in Coleraine and access control in Coleraine.

Full detail of the service itself is on our burglar and intruder alarm page. The nearest sibling town pages are burglar alarms in Ballymena and burglar alarms in Magherafelt, and the coverage map lists everywhere else.
