The survey, and the fire alarm interface nobody remembers
A survey of a single commercial building takes 60 to 90 minutes. The engineer walks every entry, exit and internal door that needs controlling, works out cable routes or confirms that wireless is suitable, looks hard at the existing lock furniture and door frames, and asks what should happen at each door out of hours rather than only during the working day. On a heritage or listed building inside the walls, the fixing and cable constraints are settled here rather than on installation day.
The item that most often gets left out of a specification is the fire alarm interface. Any electrically locked door on an escape route has to fail safe and release on a fire alarm signal, so we include that in every specification, wire the access control side to accept it, prove the release at commissioning and record it in the handover pack. The trade-offs are battery servicing and the fact that a battery cylinder cannot hold a door open on a fire alarm signal, so we go through those at survey before anything is specified.
