Home Security Systems Derry

A home security system in Derry usually means an intruder alarm, CCTV, or both working together, with access control added where a gate or shared entrance needs it. Advanced Overwatch is SSAIB certificated (NIRE127) specifically for Intruder Alarm Systems, Visual Surveillance Systems (VSS) and Access Control Systems. We survey your home free, quote one fixed price, and you decide from there.

Thousands of premises secured since 2017. SSAIB certificated Company, ISO 9001, 14001, 27001 and 45001 certified.

Which of these sounds like you?

  • Something already happened. A break-in, an attempted one, or damage to a car or shed. You want it sorted quickly and properly, and you want to stop second-guessing every noise at night.
  • Something made you think about it. A neighbour was targeted, you have just moved in, or you are away more than you used to be. Nothing has gone wrong, and you would like to keep it that way.
  • Someone has asked you for it. An insurer, a landlord, or a mortgage or letting condition that specifies an alarm to a recognised standard, with paperwork to prove it.

All three start the same way: a free survey of the property, then one fixed quote.

Start with what you are protecting, not with the kit

Most people ring us asking which system to buy. The more useful question is what you are trying to stop, because that decides the answer.

If the worry is someone getting inside while you are out or asleep, the intruder alarm does the work. It detects entry and makes staying there unpleasant and loud, and it is the system insurers usually mean when they specify security.

If the worry is what happens outside the front door, CCTV does the work: vehicles on the drive, a shed or oil tank down the garden, deliveries, or repeated nuisance you need a record of. Cameras rarely stop the first incident, but they identify and they deter repeats.

If the worry is who can get in through a shared or gated entrance, that is access control, and it matters more at apartments and converted properties than at a standard semi.

Plenty of Derry homes need two of the three. Very few need all three. A survey should tell you which, and it should be willing to tell you that you need less than you expected.

Monitored or bells only: the decision that changes the price

This is the fork in the road, and it is worth understanding before anyone quotes you.

Bells only Monitored
What happens on activation Siren and strobe at the property Siren, plus the signal goes to an alarm receiving centre
Who responds Whoever hears it, if anyone Trained operators follow an agreed escalation list
If you are away Depends entirely on a neighbour Handled the same whether you are home or in Spain
Ongoing cost None after installation A monitoring charge
Police response Not available Possible where a URN applies and the activation is confirmed
Typically suits Occupied homes on a busy street with neighbours nearby Homes left empty regularly, rural or set-back properties, higher-value contents

Bells only is a genuine choice, not a lesser one. On a terraced Cityside street where a siren will be heard by six households within seconds, it often does the job. On a bungalow off a lane at Eglinton with no near neighbour, a siren is largely talking to itself, and monitoring is the part that actually changes the outcome.

Where a monitored system is set up for police response, the URN is issued by PSNI and the system is operated in line with UK police policy on confirmed alarm systems, which is why confirmation technology and low false-alarm rates matter. We explain what that commits you to before you sign anything.

Wired or wireless in Derry housing stock

Derry has a broad mix of property ages, and the building is usually what decides this rather than any preference of ours.

Solid-wall terraces on the Cityside, and the older listed frontages in and around the walled city, are the ones where cabling gets sensitive. There is often no easy void to run through, and on a protected frontage you cannot simply fix trunking wherever it suits. Wireless detection with carefully sited sounders is frequently the right answer, and it is the least invasive.

Post-war and later estates on both sides of the Foyle, and most of the Waterside stock, take a wired system easily where you want one. Wired is still the more robust choice in a large property, particularly where you want detection in outbuildings.

The rural fringe is its own case. Around Culmore, Drumahoe, Eglinton and the lanes beyond them, mobile signal is not uniform, and a monitored system that signals over a path with poor coverage is a system with a weak point. We check signal at the property during the survey rather than assuming it, and where it is marginal we specify dual-path signalling so a single failure does not take the alarm off the air.

Is home CCTV legal if it sees the neighbour's drive?

Yes, with a limit worth understanding before you position anything.

While your cameras only capture your own property, you are covered by the household exemption under Article 2(2)(c) of the UK GDPR, and no further obligations apply. That exemption falls away once a camera regularly and deliberately covers a neighbour’s garden or driveway, or the public street. The test is regular, deliberate coverage, not the odd stray pixel at the edge of a frame.

Past that point you are expected to handle the footage responsibly: point cameras at what you actually need, tell people recording is happening, keep footage only as long as it is useful, and hand over a copy if someone asks for footage of themselves. Using cameras to target or intimidate a specific person is a separate matter and can engage the Protection from Harassment (Northern Ireland) Order 1997.

In practice this is a positioning problem, and it is solved at survey. Angling a camera down the boundary rather than across it, or masking a zone in the recorder, usually gets you the coverage you want without the argument. For camera detail, see our CCTV installation in Derry.

How to choose an installer in Derry

Three checks separate a professional installation from a box on a wall.

Certification, checked rather than claimed. Advanced Overwatch is SSAIB certificated (NIRE127) specifically for Intruder Alarm Systems, Visual Surveillance Systems (VSS) and Access Control Systems. Certification is what insurers look for, and it is verifiable, so check any installer’s number rather than taking a logo on a website at face value.

A system designed to a standard. Intruder alarms should be designed and installed to BS EN 50131, applied through PD 6662:2017, which sets the security grade from a risk assessment of your actual property. Grade 2 is the common domestic example, though the right grade depends on the property and contents rather than being fixed in advance.

Paperwork you can hand to an insurer. A specification, a certificate and a maintenance arrangement. If an installer cannot produce these, the system may not satisfy the condition you bought it for.

We work across Derry and the north west across Northern Ireland. There is no local branch here, which we would rather say plainly than imply otherwise. For a gated or shared entrance, see access control installation in Derry, or compare home and commercial solutions.

What does it cost?

Price follows the size of the property, the number of detection points or cameras, and whether you want monitoring. A two-bedroom terrace and a four-bedroom detached with outbuildings are different jobs, so a figure quoted before anyone has seen the property is a guess.

What we can promise is the process. The survey is free, the quote that follows is one fixed price covering equipment and installation, and the figure we quote is the figure you pay. Nothing is added afterwards. If the honest answer is that you need less than you thought, we will tell you that at the survey rather than after the invoice.

What happens next

  1. Free survey. We visit, walk the property with you, check entry points and signal, and agree what actually needs covering.
  2. Fixed quote. One price for equipment and installation, with monitoring costs stated separately and clearly.
  3. Installation day. Most home systems go in within a day. We tidy up and show you how to use it before we leave.
  4. Aftercare and guarantee. Certification and specification for your insurer, a 12-month parts and labour guarantee, and a maintenance arrangement if you want one.

Standards Explained

BS EN 50131, Alarm systems, Intrusion and hold-up systems The European standard series that sets what an intruder alarm has to do: how detection, control, signalling and power supply must perform. Systems are graded 1 to 4 by the level of risk they are designed to resist, with the grade chosen from a risk assessment of the individual property.

PD 6662:2017 The UK scheme document that applies BS EN 50131 in practice here. It sets out how a compliant system is designed, installed, commissioned and maintained in the UK, and it is the reference an insurer or a certification body will expect an installer to work to.

SSAIB, NIRE127 The Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board is a UKAS-accredited certification body. Advanced Overwatch is SSAIB certificated (NIRE127) specifically for Intruder Alarm Systems, Visual Surveillance Systems (VSS) and Access Control Systems. Our Engineers, subcontractors and Fire Risk Assessors are highly experienced, thoroughly understanding commercial and residential fire detection and alarm requirements.

UK GDPR Article 2(2)(c), the household exemption The provision that takes purely personal or household activity outside data protection law. It is why filming your own property needs no formal justification, and why regularly and deliberately filming beyond your boundary steps outside the exemption.

Frequently Asked Questions

Usually an intruder alarm, CCTV cameras, or both, with access control added where there is a gate or shared entrance. Systems can run standalone or be monitored by an alarm receiving centre.

It depends on the size of the property, how many detection points or cameras it needs, and whether you want monitoring. We survey free and then give one fixed price, with no extras added afterwards.

Bells only suits an occupied home with neighbours close enough to hear it. Monitoring earns its cost where a property is regularly empty, rural, or set back from other houses.

Yes. Where cabling would be invasive or a protected frontage rules out surface containment, we specify wireless detection and site sounders carefully. We confirm the approach at the survey.

Yes, though signal varies around Culmore, Drumahoe, Eglinton and the outlying lanes. We test coverage at the property and specify dual-path signalling where a single path would be marginal.

You can, but once a camera regularly and deliberately covers the street or a neighbour’s property the UK GDPR household exemption no longer applies, and you take on responsibilities for the footage. We position cameras at survey to avoid that where possible.
