Coleraine town centre CCTV

Advanced Overwatch does more than install CCTV in Coleraine. We monitor the Coleraine town centre CCTV network, part of the public space scheme owned and managed by Safer Causeway across Coleraine, Portrush and Portstewart, which we have operated under contract since 2022. We upgraded every camera and built a new town centre CCTV control room, and the network is watched by our public-space, SIA-licensed CCTV operators. They also work on a daily basis with the Community Rescue Service to help locate high-risk missing and vulnerable people. Read more about our town centre CCTV monitoring.

What we would do at your property

We survey the building, recommend the camera positions and the recording, install the system and explain how to use it. Maintenance and support are agreed at the same time.

Our Crime in My Area page for Coleraine publishes Police Service of Northern Ireland data through the UK Police open data service, and it is the sensible starting point for anyone deciding where a camera should point. In July 2026 the page records 241 crimes within a mile of the town centre, of which 118 fall into the categories that page marks as security relevant: violence and sexual offences, criminal damage and arson, other theft, possession of weapons, burglary and vehicle crime.

The breakdown for that month is anti social behaviour 97, violence and sexual offences 76, criminal damage and arson 27, shoplifting 11, other crime 9, other theft 5, drugs 4, possession of weapons 4, burglary 3, vehicle crime 3 and public order 2. Across the whole settlement in the same month, on the official settlement boundary rather than the town centre, PSNI recorded 294 incidents. Over the last twelve reported months the one mile measure totals 2,086 incidents. July 2026 on its own was 30 per cent higher than July 2025, and our Coleraine crime page places that month in the higher third of the 51 Northern Ireland towns it tracks on the same one mile measure.

The anonymised map points for July 2026 group most heavily on Railway Place, Riverside Park South, Ferryquay Place, Mossvale Park and Glenburn Crescent. High counts there reflect busy public places rather than dangerous streets, but they do tell you where people and incidents concentrate.

Where cameras earn their place in Coleraine

Read that breakdown again and one thing stands out for camera design. Burglary is a small number. Damage, theft and public order incidents are large numbers, and they happen in the open, in daylight as often as at night. That changes what a system is for. In Coleraine a camera is far more often being asked to identify a person in a public space than to catch somebody forcing a door.

The town centre. The Diamond, Church Street, New Row and Bridge Street are a tight retail core with narrow frontages and service lanes behind. Cameras at the shop front do the identification work; the ones people forget are on the rear yard and the fire exit, where the damage and the dumping happen.

Railway Place and the transport interchange. This is the single busiest cluster in the July map points. Premises facing it usually need a camera set for face height on the approach rather than a wide shot of the whole street.

Riverside Retail Park and the car parks. Vehicle crime is a small monthly count here, but car parks are where a wide angle overview plus one identification camera at the pedestrian entrance beats six general views.

The Bann, the harbour and the marina. Waterside sites have long, unobserved approaches and very poor background lighting, which is where infrared performance and camera positioning matter more than resolution on paper.

Ulster University and the student housing. The campus on the Cromore Road pulls shared housing through the Portstewart Road, Mountsandel Road and the surrounding streets. Landlords generally want an entrance camera and clear signage rather than internal coverage, and there are data protection reasons for that.

Loughanhill and the Bushmills Road units. Yards, compounds and roller shutters, where the useful camera covers the gate and the vehicle, not the building.

A camera that identifies somebody, and a camera that shows a shape

The most common disappointment with CCTV is footage that shows an incident clearly but cannot identify anybody in it. That is a design problem, not a camera fault.

The useful framework is DORI, the detect, observe, recognise and identify bands set out in BS EN 62676-4. Identification needs many more pixels across a face than detection does, which in practice means either a camera much closer to the subject or a much longer lens on a much narrower view. A single wide camera trying to do both jobs does neither.

So on a Coleraine survey we normally end up specifying a small number of identification cameras at the points people must pass through, a door, a gate, a till, a stair, and wider cameras for context. We also check the lighting at night rather than trusting a daytime walk round, because a camera pointed at a bright shop sign or a low winter sun will silhouette everybody who walks under it.

CCTV in a Coleraine business is personal data processing under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. That brings three practical duties that we set up with you at handover rather than leaving you to find out later.

Signage and transparency. Clear signs saying who operates the system and how to contact them, at every point where people are recorded.

A retention period you can justify. Keeping footage for as long as the recorder happens to hold is not a policy. We set a retention period with you and configure the system to it.

Being able to answer a request. A subject access request or a police request means getting a specific clip out, in a viewable format, without handing over footage of everybody else. Where third parties have to be obscured, our CCTV video redaction service does that work.

Our CCTV compliance page covers the duties in full, and the free ICO compliance checker walks you through where your own system stands.

Coleraine sits a few miles from the open Atlantic coast at Portstewart and Portrush, and that has a real effect on outdoor equipment. Salt laden air corrodes exposed fixings and cable glands, onshore gales load poorly braced brackets, and a lens film that would take three years to build up inland can blur a camera in a single winter here.

What that means in practice is choosing corrosion resistant housings and stainless fixings on exposed elevations, sealing cable entries properly rather than relying on a grommet, and servicing the system annually rather than when something visibly stops working. A service visit checks lens clarity and focus, camera aim, recorder storage health, remaining retention days and the system clock, because footage with the wrong timestamp is much harder to rely on.

A camera nobody has looked at for three years is not evidence. It is a hopeful object on a wall.

Cameras answer what happened. They do not stop somebody at the door and they do not bring anyone out at three in the morning. On most Coleraine sites CCTV works alongside the other two, and the matching pages are burglar alarms in Coleraine and access control in Coleraine. Where a camera system needs watching or an activation needs a response, 24/7 alarm and CCTV monitoring and keyholding and vacant property cover that side.

Full detail of the service itself is on our CCTV installation page. The nearest sibling town pages are CCTV in Portrush and CCTV in Ballymena, and the coverage map lists everywhere else. If you also have emergency lighting to keep tested and documented, emergency lighting in Coleraine covers it.

No two properties are the same, so each Coleraine job is priced from its own survey, not from a standard list. The survey is free and carries no obligation. It is also the only honest way to recommend a system for the building and the budget. For a rough idea before the survey, see what a CCTV system typically costs in Northern Ireland.

If you operate CCTV for a business or other organisation you are processing personal data, and most organisations that do have to pay the ICO data protection fee and be registered. Domestic CCTV that only covers your own property is generally exempt, but once cameras record beyond your boundary the exemption stops applying. Our free ICO compliance checker walks you through where your own system stands.

Yes. We can export a defined clip in a viewable format with the timestamps intact. Where other people appear in the footage and only one person is the subject of the request, faces and number plates can be obscured first through our CCTV video redaction service, so you are not disclosing more than you should.

It does, and it is worth designing for. Salt air corrodes exposed fixings and cable entries, coastal gales load brackets, and lens films build up faster than they do inland. On exposed elevations we specify corrosion resistant housings and stainless fixings, seal cable entries properly and recommend an annual service that includes lens cleaning, refocusing and a storage check.
