Check a specific postcodeGrade, signalling and the difference between a bell and a response
Two decisions carry most of the value in an intruder alarm, and neither of them is the panel. The first is the grade. BS EN 50131 sets Grade 1 to 4 by the level of skill and effort an intruder is expected to bring, and for the great majority of Portadown premises the honest answer is Grade 2 for a home and Grade 2 or 3 for commercial property holding stock, cash or plant. Grading up beyond what the risk supports buys nothing except cost and false alarms.
The second is what happens when it activates. A bells-only system makes a noise and depends on somebody nearby caring enough to act. On a High Street unit at three in the morning, or an industrial building at Carn with the nearest occupied premises a field away, that is a weak assumption. A monitored system passes the activation to an alarm receiving centre which works an agreed keyholder list, and confirmed signalling, where two separate detections are needed before a police response is requested, is what keeps that response available rather than withdrawn after repeated false calls.
We set out both options at survey with what each costs to run, and we let the risk decide rather than the brochure.
What an insurer asks for after a claim in Portadown
The questions are predictable and they are always the same three. Was the system set. Was it maintained. Does the specification match what the policy assumed. A Portadown retailer with a Grade 2 system and a policy written on the basis of Grade 3 has a problem that only appears at the worst possible moment.
So we take the insurer’s requirement as a design input at survey rather than discovering it later, we grade to BS EN 50131 against the actual risk, and we hand over documentation that states the grade, the zones, the signalling path and the commissioning date. Where a policy requires monitored or confirmed signalling, that is written down rather than assumed.
If you already have a system and do not know which grade it is, that is a common enough position and worth resolving before you need the answer. We will inspect an existing installation we did not fit, tell you what grade it actually meets, and set out plainly what would have to change to reach the grade your policy expects.
Confirmed signalling, and why it matters here
Portadown’s premises split three ways, and each one wants a different arrangement. Town-centre retail around High Street, Meadow Lane and the Meadows sits empty overnight with stock inside and neighbours on either side, so the priority is detecting entry early at the rear and upper floors, which is where a shop is actually entered, rather than at the front door everybody looks at.
Industrial and distribution premises on the Carn and Seagoe estates carry a different loss: plant, fuel, tools and stock taken from open ground, often by vehicle. Perimeter and yard detection matters as much as the building itself, and the alarm is worth far more linked to monitoring than to a bell on a gable nobody hears.
Homes and smallholdings out toward Tandragee and Richhill are the third case. Outbuildings sit away from the house, quad bikes and machinery are in them, and the practical answer is usually a graded system with the sheds on separate zones so they can be set overnight while the house stays off, and an activation that tells you which building it came from.

Intruder alarms in Portadown, your questions answered
What alarm suits a Portadown town-centre or High Street retail unit?
For retail around High Street, Meadow Lane and the Meadows shopping area we typically recommend a Grade 2 or Grade 3 intruder alarm depending on stock value and insurer requirement, covering entrances, tills and stockrooms. As an SSAIB certificated intruder installer (NIRE127) we can add monitored signalling so an Alarm Receiving Centre and keyholder are alerted after hours.
Do you install monitored alarms for Portadown businesses left empty at night?
Yes. For retail and industrial premises left unoccupied out of hours, a monitored intruder alarm signals an Alarm Receiving Centre so a keyholder or, where eligible, police response can be arranged. We explain confirmed-alarm signalling and what your insurer may require before any work is agreed.
Portadown’s figures show very high shop theft, what does that mean for a retail alarm?
It means out-of-hours protection and confirmed signalling matter. Shoplifting is addressed mainly during trading, often best with CCTV, but the intruder alarm protects the stock and premises after close, so for a town-centre unit we focus on graded detection at entrances and stockrooms with monitored signalling. We set the specification at survey against your insurer’s condition. Can you alarm a rural home on the Co Armagh edge of Portadown?
Yes. For homes and holdings toward Tandragee and Richhill we design to Grade 2 with reliable signalling, and where outbuildings are detached we use wireless sensors that avoid long cable runs. Monitored signalling can alert a keyholder or alarm receiving centre when the property is empty. We survey the property first.
