Most Coleraine Businesses End Up With Four Systems and Four Contractors
Walk into almost any established business in Coleraine and ask who looks after the security, and you tend to get four different answers. The cameras went in with one firm about eight years ago. The intruder alarm came with the building. Door entry was added by whoever fitted the shopfront. Somebody else does the fire alarm and the emergency lighting, and nobody is quite sure who holds the certificates.
That arrangement works fine right up until the moment it matters. Then a renewal comes round, or an insurer asks for grade documentation, or an incident happens and the footage turns out to have overwritten itself, and it becomes obvious that no single person can see the whole picture. You end up chasing four contractors for four pieces of paper, and each one only answers for their own box on the wall.
The alternative is not complicated. One certified installer designs the systems so they suit each other, fits them, services them on one schedule, and hands you one set of documentation that covers the lot. That is what we do for commercial clients here, and it is the reason most of our business work in the town starts as a tidy-up rather than a new build.
Who Calls Us About Commercial Security in Coleraine
Commercial enquiries here almost always arrive at one of three moments.
After the event.
A break-in, a forced shutter, stock going missing over a period of weeks, or an incident where the cameras were running but the footage was unusable. The priority is cover that actually works, quickly, and an honest account of why the old system did not do its job.
Ahead of the event.
A new unit, an expansion, a change of use, or a growing sense that the system on the wall is a decade past its usefulness and nobody has looked at it properly since. Nothing has gone wrong, and the point of calling is to keep it that way.
Because you have been told to.
An insurer, a landlord, a franchise agreement, a licensing condition or an audit is asking for a certified system at a stated standard, documented, fitted by a certified installer. This is the most common reason a commercial survey gets booked in Coleraine.
Whichever applies, the route is the same: a free survey of the premises, then a fixed written price.

The Diamond, Bridge Street and the Pedestrianised Retail Pitch
Retail units in the pedestrianised centre share a set of problems that units elsewhere in the town simply do not have. Servicing and deliveries happen at fixed hours through a rear yard or a shared service lane, so the back of the building has a completely different risk profile to the front. Neighbouring units are often physically joined, which matters for how detection is zoned. And a shop that trades late has staff cashing up and locking a door onto a public street at an hour when the street is quiet.
On these premises the survey usually spends its time on three things: the rear and service access rather than the display frontage, a camera position that actually covers the till and the door at a usable resolution rather than a wide shot of the whole floor, and a setting routine that one member of staff can carry out on their own at closing without a five-minute struggle.
Riverside Retail Park and Units on the Edge of Town
The larger edge-of-town units off the A29 are a different job again. Bigger floor areas, a car park that belongs to the premises, a goods-in area at the back, and considerably more perimeter to think about than a town-centre shop.
Here the useful money usually goes on perimeter and approach coverage rather than more cameras inside. External detection at the goods-in door, coverage of the car park approach at a resolution that can actually identify a vehicle, and access control on the staff and stockroom doors so the building has a record of who went where, tend to do far more than doubling the internal camera count.
Loughanhill Industrial Estate, Coleraine Business Park and the Yards Off Gateside Road
Industrial and trade premises around Loughanhill, Coleraine Business Park and Cloyfin have the highest-value contents and the least natural surveillance, particularly overnight and at weekends when the estate empties out. Plant, tools, materials, vehicles and fuel are all attractive, and a unit with a yard has a boundary rather than a shopfront.
Three things carry the weight on these sites. First, the boundary: detection and camera coverage set at the fence line and the gate, so you know about an approach before anything reaches the building. Second, monitored response, because an activation at two in the morning on an empty estate is only useful if somebody is watching it. Third, access control on the yard gate and the workshop doors, which is also what stops the slow, quiet losses that never show up as a break-in at all.
We Already Watch Coleraine Town Centre
There is one thing we can point to here that a security installer from outside the town cannot. Advanced Overwatch is the contracted operator of the Coleraine town centre CCTV network, which is owned and managed by Safer Causeway, and we have held that contract since 2022. We upgraded every camera on the system and built a new, state-of-the-art control room, and it is watched by our public-space, SIA-licensed CCTV operators, who work daily with the Community Rescue Service to help locate high-risk missing and vulnerable people.
For a business in the centre of Coleraine, that means the people designing your system are the same people who watch the street outside it every day. You can read more about our town centre CCTV monitoring.
Advanced Overwatch installs, maintains and supports the CCTV systems of public bodies including Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Mid Ulster District Council, the NHS and more.
Commercial CCTV, and What the ICO Expects of You
A commercial camera system has to do two jobs at once. It has to produce footage good enough to be worth having, and it has to be operated in a way that stands up if somebody asks about it.
On the first, the variables that actually matter are camera placement, the resolution at the distance you care about, lighting and infrared performance at the times of day you are actually vulnerable, and how long recordings are retained before they overwrite. A system specified around those four points will outperform a system chosen on camera count every time. We design commercial systems with reference to BS EN 62676, the European standard series for video surveillance systems.
On the second, once you are recording outside your own home you are a data controller, and the responsibilities are yours rather than ours. In practice that means clear signage, a retention period you have decided on deliberately rather than inherited from a default setting, controlled access to the recordings, and a process for handling a request from someone who appears in the footage. The ICO’s guidance on CCTV and video surveillance sets out what is expected, and we will set the system up to support it, including retention, signage and user access, at installation. For a deeper look at the camera side, see our CCTV installation in Coleraine page.
Access Control Is Usually the System That Pays for Itself First
Of the systems on a commercial site, access control is the one most often left until last and the one that most often turns out to have been the priority.
The reason is simple. Keys cannot be audited and cannot be withdrawn. When a member of staff leaves, or a contractor finishes, or a key goes missing, the honest answer on a keyed building is that you re-key it or you accept the risk. On a controlled door you remove one credential in about fifteen seconds, and the system tells you which doors it had been used on.
For most Coleraine businesses the useful scope is small: the staff entrance, the stockroom or server room, the yard gate, and any area holding cash, records or controlled stock. Everything else can stay on a key. We install access control systems with reference to BS EN 60839-11-1:2013, and we can integrate them with the CCTV so a door event and the footage of that door event sit alongside each other rather than in two unrelated systems.
Intruder Alarm Grades, Monitoring and What Your Insurer Will Ask
Commercial intruder alarms are specified to a security grade under BS EN 50131, and the grade is not a marketing tier, it is the outcome of a risk assessment of your premises: what is in the building, how attractive it is, how exposed it is, and what a determined attempt on it would look like. We install to PD 6662:2017 and, where a monitored police response is being sought, to BS 8243:2021 for confirmed alarm signalling.
The question of monitoring is really a question about what happens at three in the morning. An unmonitored system makes a noise. A monitored system sends the activation to an alarm receiving centre where it is handled, escalated and, on a confirmed activation with a valid police URN, passed to the police. For an empty industrial unit on a Sunday night, that difference is the entire value of the system.
Two practical points worth knowing before your renewal. Insurers commonly ask for the grade and the certification in writing, so we provide both as part of handover rather than on request. And servicing intervals differ: domestic systems are generally maintained annually, while monitored commercial systems are generally maintained twice a year. Our burglar alarm installation in Coleraine page covers the alarm side in more depth.
Fire Alarms and Emergency Lighting on the Same Schedule
Advanced Overwatch also installs, monitors and maintains fire alarm systems, emergency lighting and fire safety equipment, and for most commercial clients it makes obvious sense to have those on the same servicing schedule as everything else rather than with a separate contractor.
Advanced Overwatch is SSAIB certificated (NIRE127) specifically for Intruder Alarm Systems, Visual Surveillance Systems (VSS) and Access Control Systems. Our Engineers, subcontractors and Fire Risk Assessors are highly experienced, thoroughly understanding commercial and residential fire detection and alarm requirements. If you want the lighting side specifically, see our emergency lighting installation in Coleraine.
What It Costs to Secure a Coleraine Business
No one can price commercial security honestly over the phone, and any figure quoted without seeing the building is a number designed to get an appointment rather than an estimate. The variables that genuinely move the price are floor area and boundary length, how many doors need controlling, how many cameras are needed at what resolution and retention, wired against wireless, and whether monitoring is included. A single unit on Church Street and a yard off Gateside Road are not the same job and should not carry the same price.
Here is the commitment instead. After the survey you receive a fixed price in writing, itemised, before anything is booked in, and that figure holds unless you ask for the specification to change. No low headline number, and no revision once the vans have arrived.

Do You Need Planning Permission for Commercial CCTV in Coleraine?
For most commercial premises, standard CCTV installation does not require planning permission. The situations where it can are worth checking before you order: listed buildings, properties in a conservation area, and larger or more prominent external equipment. Some leases also carry their own restrictions on external fixings that have nothing to do with planning.
If your premises falls into any of those categories, confirm with Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council before installation, and see the Department for Infrastructure planning guidance for the general position. We will flag anything on your building that looks like it needs checking during the survey, but the consent is yours to obtain.

Coleraine Business Security FAQs
How much do business security systems cost in Coleraine?
The price is driven by floor area and boundary length, how many doors need access control, how many cameras are required and at what resolution and retention period, wired against wireless, and whether monitoring is included. We do not publish a generic commercial figure, because in a town that runs from single retail units on Church Street to yards on Gateside Road it would be meaningless. You get a free survey, then an itemised fixed price in writing before anything is booked, and that is the figure you pay.
Can one company handle our CCTV, alarm and access control together?
Yes, and for most commercial premises it is the better arrangement. One installer designing all three means the systems are specified to suit each other, one servicing schedule instead of three, one point of contact when something needs attention, and one set of certification and grade documentation to hand your insurer or auditor. Advanced Overwatch is SSAIB certificated (NIRE127) specifically for Intruder Alarm Systems, Visual Surveillance Systems (VSS) and Access Control Systems.
Is our commercial CCTV system GDPR compliant?
We install and configure systems to support compliance, including signage, a deliberate retention period and controlled access to recordings. Compliance itself also depends on how you operate the system day to day, because once you record beyond your own home you are the data controller. The ICO’s CCTV and video surveillance guidance sets out what is expected, and we will walk you through the practical parts at handover.
What alarm grade does a business in Coleraine need?
The grade is set by a risk assessment of your specific premises under BS EN 50131, taking account of what is stored there, how exposed the building is, and what a determined attempt would involve. It is not something that can be answered from a postcode. Your insurer may also state a required grade in your policy, so it is worth checking your schedule before the survey and bringing it with you.
How often should a commercial security system be serviced?
Monitored commercial intruder alarm systems are generally maintained twice a year, whereas domestic systems are generally maintained annually. CCTV and access control systems are usually serviced annually unless the site conditions or your insurer require otherwise. We put every system on a single schedule so you are not tracking separate dates for separate contractors.
Do you work outside our trading hours?
Yes. Retail, hospitality and industrial clients often need installation or servicing work done outside opening hours or around delivery windows, and we schedule around that as standard rather than as an extra. Timings are agreed and written into the fixed quote before the work is booked.
