Emergency Light Testing Carrickfergus
Emergency light testing in Carrickfergus is a brief monthly function test on every emergency luminaire and exit sign, followed once a year by a test that runs each fitting for its full rated duration. Advanced Overwatch tests to BS 5266-1 and BS EN 50172, identifies failures by position and issues a signed certificate for your fire safety log book.

Carrickfergus
Emergency light testing in Carrickfergus
Advanced Overwatch tests emergency lighting for businesses in Carrickfergus and across the Mid and East Antrim borough. The town runs along the north shore of Belfast Lough, with the Norman castle and the Marine Highway at the front of it, the marina beside that, town centre retail on High Street and West Street, and industrial and trade premises inland around Sullatober, the Marshallstown Road and Woodburn.
Carrickfergus is also a commuter town on the Belfast line, which matters more than it sounds. Premises that are lightly staffed through the day are common here, and the monthly emergency lighting check is the routine most likely to slip when nobody is permanently on site to do it.
Older buildings
Older and converted buildings along the Carrickfergus shore
Commercial property near the castle and the waterfront is largely older stock, and conversions are common: a shop into offices, a store into a cafe, a warehouse into units. Conversions are where emergency lighting quietly falls behind the building.
The escape route moved and the lighting did not.
A conversion usually changes the way people leave the building. Fittings that lit the original route can end up lighting a corridor nobody now uses, while the new final exit has nothing over it.
Cable routes are restricted.
In older and protected fabric you cannot chase in wherever you like. Self contained fittings, careful positioning and existing routes usually solve it, but that has to be worked out at survey stage, not on the day of the test.
Mixed ownership.
Subdivided buildings end up with several occupiers sharing one stair or one final exit. We record which fittings serve the shared route, so testing it becomes one named person’s job instead of an assumption shared by four tenants.
The marina and the leisure premises along the front bring their own point. Buildings with public circulation, changing levels and evening use need the exit signage and the escape route lighting checked as one system, because in the dark a sign nobody can see is the same as no sign.

Who carries the duty in Northern Ireland
The legal duty
Northern Ireland does not use the responsible person wording found in England and Wales. Here the duty is set by the Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006: Article 25 puts it on the employer for the safety of employees, and Article 26 puts it on any person who has control of relevant premises to any extent. Owners, occupiers and anyone with a repairing obligation can all be caught by it.
The practical requirements sit in the Fire Safety Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010. Regulation 13(2)(h) requires emergency routes and exits that need illumination to have emergency lighting of adequate intensity when the normal lighting fails. Regulation 16 requires the equipment to be under a suitable system of maintenance and kept in efficient working order and in good repair. A current test record is how you show the maintenance duty has been met. Our guide to the full emergency lighting test schedule lists every check that record has to cover.
What the standards require, month by month and year by year
Testing
The code of practice is BS 5266-1:2025, current since 29 October 2025 and replacing the 2016 edition. The testing and record keeping requirements sit in BS EN 50172:2024, covering installation, verification, operation, testing and documentation for emergency escape lighting systems.
Monthly, the supply is interrupted briefly and every fitting and exit sign is confirmed to light, to be clean and to be unobstructed. Annually, every fitting is run on battery for its full rated duration, commonly three hours, then checked again once the period is up.
On a lightly staffed Carrickfergus site the monthly check is the one that gets missed, and a year of missed monthly checks is usually visible in the annual results. If nobody is reliably on site to run it, say so at the survey and we will either build the checks into a maintenance visit pattern or look at fittings with self test capability so the result is logged without anybody having to remember it.
What you receive after the annual test
Reporting
The output is a document you can hand to an inspector, an insurer or a new tenant without explanation.
- Every luminaire and exit sign listed by location, type and rated duration.
- A result against each fitting, so a failure points at a room rather than at a number.
- What was repaired on the visit and what remains, with a recommendation.
- A signed certificate and the entry for your fire safety log book.
Engineers carry common batteries and lamps and clear most faults during the visit. Replacement fittings are quoted separately. The testing itself is a fixed quote after a free survey.
Qualified, audited and independent
Emergency lighting is designed, installed and tested by qualified engineers to the British Standards, with commissioning and test documentation issued every visit. One Coleraine team, no franchise and no call centre.

Emergency light testing in Carrickfergus, your questions
How often does emergency lighting need testing in Carrickfergus?
Monthly for the short function test and once a year for the full rated duration test, in line with BS 5266-1 and BS EN 50172. Both results have to be recorded, and it is the record rather than the test that an inspector asks for first.
Our building is old and partly listed. Can emergency lighting be fitted sympathetically?
Usually, yes. Self contained fittings, careful positioning and use of existing cable routes avoid most of the intrusive work. What matters is deciding it at survey stage, with the building in front of us, rather than turning up with a standard layout.
Nobody is on site every day. Who does the monthly check?
This is common in Carrickfergus. The options are to fold the monthly check into a scheduled maintenance visit, or to move to fittings with self test capability that log the result themselves. We will set out both at the survey with the cost of each.
What if the annual test shows several failures?
Each failure is logged by position. Engineers carry common batteries and lamps, so most are put right on the day. Anything needing a new fitting is quoted separately and stays on the report as outstanding until it is done, which keeps your record honest.
Do you work in Larne, Whitehead and the rest of Mid and East Antrim?
Yes. Advanced Overwatch covers the whole of Northern Ireland. If you want detail for the neighbouring town, see emergency light testing in Larne.
