Which of these sounds like you?

  • Your fire risk assessment or insurer has flagged it. You have been told the emergency lighting needs a current test record and you need the certificate and log book sorted quickly.
  • You have taken on a building and nobody can tell you when it was last tested. No log book, no paperwork, and no idea whether the fittings still hold charge.
  • Something has already gone wrong. A power cut showed fittings that did not come on, or a luminaire failed its last test and was never put right.

Any of the three starts the same way: a free survey of your Castlereagh premises, then one fixed quote.

How much does emergency light testing cost in Castlereagh?

Price depends on how many luminaires are on site and how easy they are to access. We survey your Castlereagh premises free of charge, then give you one fixed quote before any work starts. There are no hidden extras added afterwards, and the price we quote is the price you pay.

What happens during a test?

Monthly check

Each luminaire and exit sign is switched to battery power for a short period and checked visually. This confirms the fitting still works and the lamp or LED array is not damaged. It takes minutes per fitting and does not require the premises to close.

Annual 3-hour discharge test

Every fitting is run on battery power for its full rated duration, unattended, usually overnight or outside trading hours. We return once the discharge is complete to check every fitting reached full duration, log any that did not, and issue your compliance certificate and test log book entry.

What happens next

How often does emergency lighting need testing?

BS 5266-1:2025 sets two testing tiers for commercial emergency lighting. A monthly function test is a short activation check that confirms every fitting and exit sign still illuminates. An annual 3-hour duration test discharges each fitting for its full rated duration, which is the only test that reliably catches a battery that has quietly degraded over the year. Both tiers are needed. A fitting that passes its monthly check can still fail the annual duration test. Our guide covers what belongs in the emergency lighting log book after each of them.

If a fitting does not reach its rated duration or fails to illuminate, we flag it, quote the fix on the spot, and re-test once it has been repaired. Within our 12-month guarantee period, there is no separate call-out charge for that return visit.

Castlereagh sits within our regular Belfast, Lisburn and Down coverage, so a Castlereagh visit is scheduled alongside our existing engineer routes in the area rather than as a special trip. Get in touch and we will confirm the next available slot for your premises.

Most Castlereagh commercial premises use one of two system types. If you are not sure which one you have, our survey identifies it at no charge.

Wired / central battery system Self-contained luminaires
Power source One central battery bank feeds every fitting Each fitting has its own individual battery
Typical site Larger commercial buildings, multi-unit sites Offices, shops, smaller retail units
Testing Central battery is tested once for the whole system Each luminaire is tested individually
Fault impact A central battery fault can affect multiple fittings at once A fault is usually isolated to one luminaire
Maintenance Requires access to a dedicated battery room or cupboard Faulty units can be swapped fitting by fitting

Yes, in practice you need a current certificate and a test log book. The Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 places a duty on the “appropriate person”, the building owner, employer or facilities manager, to keep fire safety systems in working order, including emergency lighting. BS 5266-1:2025 sets out the testing regime and test log book that demonstrate the duty is being met. A Castlereagh premises without a current log book and certificate is exposed to enforcement action and possible insurance problems.

BS 5266-1:2025, Emergency Lighting, Code of Practice for the Emergency Lighting of Premises The British Standard that sets out how emergency lighting is tested and maintained once installed. For ongoing compliance it specifies the monthly function test and the annual 3-hour duration test, plus the record-keeping expected in a test log book. It is the recognised code of practice Castlereagh businesses use to show their fire safety duty is being met, not a standalone legal requirement in its own right.

Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 The primary fire safety legislation in Northern Ireland. A separate law, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, applies only in England and Wales, not here. The NI Order places the duty on the “appropriate person” to carry out a fire risk assessment and keep fire safety equipment, including emergency lighting, maintained and working. Enforcement sits with the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service.

The same testing programme runs in Larne, Carrickfergus and Newtownards, and the wider emergency lighting service covers design and installation as well as testing.
