Emergency Light Testing Enniskillen
Emergency light testing in Enniskillen means a short monthly function check on every emergency luminaire and exit sign, plus a yearly test that discharges each fitting for its full rated duration. Advanced Overwatch works to BS 5266-1 and BS EN 50172, repairs what fails where it can and issues a signed certificate and log book entry.

Enniskillen and Fermanagh
Emergency light testing in Enniskillen and across Fermanagh
Enniskillen sits on an island in the River Erne between Upper and Lower Lough Erne, and the town centre is compact because of it. Advanced Overwatch tests emergency lighting for premises across the town and the wider Fermanagh and Omagh district: retail at Erneside Shopping Centre and along the main street, manufacturing and trade units at Killyhevlin, hotels and guest accommodation around the lakes, and the offices, clinics and community buildings that serve a large rural catchment from the town, including the area around the South West Acute Hospital on the Irvinestown Road.
We cover Fermanagh across Northern Ireland. That is a genuine drive, and it shapes how the work is planned rather than being something we gloss over.
Sleeping risk
Premises where people sleep need a stricter plan
The lakes bring tourism, and with it hotels, guest houses and self catering units. Premises where people sleep change the emergency lighting problem in two ways.
- Guests do not know the building. Somebody who has been in the building for one night has no mental map of the exits. Escape route lighting and exit signage have to carry the whole job, so a blocked, dim or missing fitting is far more serious than in an office where everyone knows the way out.
- The duration test cannot run over occupied rooms. Discharging the fittings for their full rated duration leaves the batteries flat until they recharge. In accommodation that means planning the test for a genuinely quiet night, or agreeing alternative cover, rather than squeezing it in.
Function rooms and bars add a third point. Maintained fittings, which stay lit whenever the premises are occupied, are normally what is needed where lighting can be dimmed or where the public gather in numbers. Rooms change use more often than lighting gets redesigned, so we check the fitting type against how the room is actually used now.

Testing rural Fermanagh sites without three separate visits
Rural sites
Plenty of Fermanagh premises are ten or twenty miles out from Enniskillen: farm based businesses, workshops, visitor attractions, small manufacturing. Sending an engineer to each one separately is how testing gets expensive.
Where you run more than one site, the annual duration tests are planned as a route rather than as separate call outs, with dates set in advance so you are not chasing an appointment in the week the certificate runs out. If you have your own maintenance staff we will show them the monthly function test and hand over the log book format, and we take the annual test ourselves.
The legal duty in Northern Ireland
The legal duty
Fermanagh premises come under the same rules as everywhere else in Northern Ireland. The Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 places the duty on the employer under Article 25, and on any person with control of the premises to any extent under Article 26.
Under the Fire Safety Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010, regulation 13(2)(h) requires emergency routes and exits that need illumination to be provided with emergency lighting of adequate intensity in case the normal lighting fails, and regulation 16 requires the equipment to be under a suitable system of maintenance and kept in efficient working order and in good repair. The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service enforces both, and the first thing usually asked for is the log book.
What BS 5266-1 and BS EN 50172 ask for
The standards
BS 5266-1:2025 is the code of practice for the emergency lighting of premises, and it became current on 29 October 2025, replacing the 2016 edition. BS EN 50172:2024 sits alongside it and deals with emergency escape lighting systems: installation requirements, verification, operation, testing and the documentation that has to be kept.
In practice that comes down to two tests. A monthly function test briefly simulates a mains failure and confirms each luminaire and exit sign lights and is unobstructed. An annual test runs every fitting for its full rated duration, commonly three hours, and checks it again at the end.
The reason both exist is that they find different faults. The monthly test catches a dead lamp, a failed changeover or a sign that somebody has stacked boxes in front of. The annual test catches a battery that has quietly lost most of its capacity, which is the failure that only shows up once the fittings have been running for a while. The guide on what the monthly and annual tests each have to prove sets both out with the log book entry that goes alongside them.
Your certificate, and what it should say
Certificates
A certificate that says only that the system was tested is not much use. Ours lists:
- every emergency luminaire and exit sign, by location, type and rated duration;
- the result against each fitting, so a failure is traceable to a room;
- work carried out on the visit and anything still outstanding;
- the date, the engineer and the standard the test was carried out to.
That is the document a fire safety inspector, an insurer or an incoming tenant will ask to see. Engineers carry common batteries and lamps so most faults are cleared during the visit, and replacement fittings are quoted separately. Testing is a fixed quote after a free survey.

Emergency light testing in Enniskillen, your questions
How often should emergency lighting be tested in a Fermanagh hotel or guest house?
The same intervals apply as anywhere else, a monthly function test and an annual full duration test, but the annual test needs a quiet night because the batteries are flat until they recharge. We book it in advance around your occupancy rather than turning up and asking.
Do you actually cover Fermanagh from Coleraine?
Yes. We are one Northern Ireland team working from a single office at Beresford House in Coleraine, and Fermanagh is part of the coverage. Because the distance is real, Fermanagh visits are planned as routes with dates agreed ahead of time.
What is the difference between maintained and non maintained fittings?
A maintained fitting is lit whenever the premises are occupied and switches to battery if the mains fails. A non maintained fitting is dark until the mains fails. Bars, function rooms and places where the lighting can be dimmed usually need maintained fittings, and we check that against how each room is used during the survey.
Can our own staff do the monthly test?
In many buildings yes. The monthly function test is short and we will show your staff how to carry it out and how to record it, then take the annual duration test ourselves. That keeps the routine in house and the demanding test with an engineer.
How much will it cost?
Emergency light testing is priced as a fixed quote after a free survey. The count of fittings, how they are reached and how many sites you run all change the figure, so quoting a rate before seeing the building would be guesswork.
