Emergency Light Testing Larne

Emergency light testing in Larne keeps your emergency lighting legally compliant and ready to work the second mains power drops. Advanced Overwatch runs BS 5266-1:2025 testing programmes for shops, offices, warehouses and industrial premises across Larne and the wider Mid and East Antrim area: the monthly function check, the annual 3-hour duration test, a free survey first, one fixed quote with nothing added afterwards, and a written certificate and log book entry every time we visit.

Rated 5.0 from 67 Google reviews. Advanced Overwatch is SSAIB certificated (NIRE127) specifically for Intruder Alarm Systems, Visual Surveillance Systems (VSS) and Access Control Systems. Advanced Overwatch is ISO 9001, 14001, 27001 and 45001 certified. That SSAIB certification does not cover fire alarm work or emergency lighting.

Which of these sounds like you?

  • Your fire risk assessment came back with emergency lighting on it. You need a current test record, a certificate and a log book that will stand up to inspection, and you would rather it was simply handled.
  • You have moved into a Larne unit and inherited the lighting. No log book, no paperwork, no idea when the fittings were last discharged or whether the batteries still hold.
  • A power cut showed you the problem. Some fittings came on, some did not, and now you want to know how many others would fail.

All three start the same way: a free survey of your premises, then one fixed quote.

Why coastal premises in Larne fail more fittings than inland sites

Salt-laden air off the lough and the open sea is aggressive towards electrical fittings, and premises near the harbour, the ferry terminal and the exposed edges of the town see it worst. It works on emergency lighting in three ways.

Corrosion creeps into the luminaire housing and the gasket seals, so a fitting that looks fine from the floor may no longer be sealed. It attacks the battery terminals and contacts inside the unit, which raises resistance and quietly shortens how long the battery can actually sustain a discharge. And it degrades the diffuser and lens, so the light that does reach the escape route is dimmer than the original design intended.

The practical effect is that a coastal fitting often passes its monthly flick test happily and then falls short on the annual 3-hour discharge, because a short activation never asks the battery the hard question. If your premises sit within reach of the salt spray, the annual duration test is not a formality. It is the test that tells you the truth, and it is the one worth getting right. The testing intervals in full, including the five yearly check on light levels, are set out in our emergency lighting guide.

How often does emergency lighting have to be tested?

BS 5266-1:2025 sets two intervals, and you need both.

The monthly function test briefly switches every luminaire and exit sign onto battery power to confirm it still illuminates. It is quick, it does not need the premises to close, and it catches the obvious failures.

The annual 3-hour duration test runs each fitting on battery for its full rated duration. This is the only test that reliably finds a battery that has degraded over the year, which is exactly the failure mode a coastal site is most exposed to.

A three hour discharge leaves your emergency lighting unavailable while it recharges, so it belongs outside occupied hours. That is straightforward for a Main Street shop and considerably less so around the port, where freight handling, haulage yards and shift-based manufacturing do not conveniently stop at five o’clock.

We plan the discharge around how your site actually runs rather than around our diary. For most premises that means an overnight or weekend run, with the test starting after you close down and our engineer returning once the discharge has completed to record which fittings held their full duration and which did not. For sites that genuinely never stop, we test in zones across more than one visit so a compliant escape route is maintained throughout. Say what your hours are at survey stage and we will build the programme around them.

Town centre retail and offices Port side warehouse and yard Industrial unit with offices
Typical fittings Self contained luminaires and exit signs High bay fittings, external and loading bay lighting Mixed: high bay in the unit, self contained in the offices
Main risk Fittings hidden by later shopfitting or signage Salt corrosion, impact damage, height access Two different systems ageing at different rates
Access needed Minimal, usually within trading hours Access equipment for high level fittings Both, usually split across the visit
Common finding Exit signs relamped but never duration tested Housings sealed poorly after past repairs Office side tested, warehouse side overlooked

If you are not sure whether your fittings are self contained, each with its own battery, or fed from a central battery system, the survey identifies it at no charge.

Advanced Overwatch records the failed fitting, shows you what failed and why, and quotes the repair or replacement on the spot so there is no second visit just to price it. Once the fix is done we re-test that fitting and update your certificate. Within the 12-month guarantee period there is no separate call-out charge for that return visit.

Yes, in practice you need a current certificate and a log book. The Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 places a duty on the “appropriate person”, meaning the building owner, employer or facilities manager, to keep fire safety provisions in working order, and emergency lighting is one of them. BS 5266-1:2025 sets out the testing regime and the log book that demonstrate you are meeting it. A Larne premises with no current certificate and no log book is exposed on both enforcement and insurance.

Cost follows the number of luminaires on site and how hard they are to reach, which is why a warehouse with high level fittings prices differently from a shop unit. We survey free, then give you one fixed quote before anything starts. The figure we quote is the figure you pay, and nothing is added afterwards.

BS 5266-1:2025, Emergency Lighting, Code of Practice for the Emergency Lighting of Premises The British Standard covering how emergency lighting is tested and maintained once it is in. It specifies the monthly function test, the annual 3-hour duration test, and the test log book records expected alongside them. It is the recognised code of practice used to show a fire safety duty is being met, rather than a law in itself. It replaced the 2016 edition, which was withdrawn on 31 October 2025.

Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 The primary fire safety legislation here. A different law, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, applies only in England and Wales and does not apply in Northern Ireland. The NI Order, with the Fire Safety Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010, places the duty on the “appropriate person” to assess fire risk and keep fire safety equipment maintained and working. Enforcement sits with the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on how many luminaires you have and how easy they are to reach. We survey free, then give one fixed quote with no hidden extras before any work begins.

Salt-laden air corrodes housings, seals and battery contacts. That shortens how long a battery can sustain a discharge, so fittings that pass a short monthly check can still fall short on the annual 3-hour test.

Yes. The 3-hour discharge is normally run overnight or at a weekend. For sites that operate continuously we test in zones across more than one visit so a compliant escape route is kept available throughout.

A written compliance certificate and your test log book entry, listing every fitting tested, anything that failed, and what was done about it.

Yes. We set up a rolling programme across your Larne and wider Northern Ireland premises, with one point of contact and consistent pricing.
