Yard, shopfront and lane: three jobs, three designs

The yard. On the estates around Carn, Silverwood and Mahon Road the design starts at the perimeter and the gate, not the office door. Approach and boundary cameras, loading-bay cover, and positions chosen so a vehicle is readable coming in as well as going out. Advanced Overwatch is SSAIB certificated (NIRE127) specifically for Intruder Alarm Systems, Visual Surveillance Systems (VSS) and Access Control Systems. Gate and door entry can run on the same system as the cameras, which means one timeline when you come to review something.

The shopfront. Around High Street, Meadow Lane and the Meadows the job is identification during trading hours: entrances, tills, aisle ends and the stockroom door, with exposure set for a person against a bright doorway rather than for the room as a whole. A wide view of a shop floor is reassuring and almost never evidential.

The lane. For holdings towards Tandragee and Richhill, fixed broadband and mains power both run out before the yard does. We use 4G-connected cameras and, where power is the harder problem, solar, covering the lane entrance, the yard and the machinery shed with viewing from a phone.

Evidential quality, retention, and the duties that come with recording

A camera that records something unusable is worse than none, because it creates the belief that the incident is covered. Evidential quality is a design decision made at survey: what the footage has to prove, at what distance, in what light, and therefore what lens goes where. A camera set to give a wide, comfortable view of a whole yard will not identify anyone in it. Identification needs its own camera at its own position, and on a Portadown retail floor that usually means the entrance and the till, while on a Carn or Silverwood yard it means the gate.

Retention is the second decision and the one most often left at whatever the recorder shipped with. Incidents are frequently reported days or weeks after they happen, so a period that is too short quietly defeats the whole system, while keeping everything indefinitely is neither necessary nor defensible. We agree a period with you and set the recorder to it.

The third part is the legal duty, which applies to a small shop as much as to a distribution operator. Any system that records identifiable people beyond your own boundary brings duties under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018: visible signage, a legitimate purpose, a decision on who can view footage, and the ability to answer a request from someone who has been recorded. Where a site records number plates, a registration is personal data too and needs its own documented reason. We set this up at handover rather than leaving it to be discovered later, and there is a fuller walk-through in our CCTV and ICO compliance checker.

Portadown, Craigavon, Lurgan, Tandragee, Richhill and the surrounding County Armagh townlands run on one southern route, so a distribution site and a rural holding can be handled by the same team on the same visit. Nearby pages: intruder alarms in Portadown, CCTV in Craigavon, and the full coverage list. Surveys are arranged as the route allows, and we do not quote a timed response we could not stand over.

A Portadown camera system has two audiences that are not you: PSNI, and whoever handles the claim. Both want the same things, and neither is impressed by resolution on its own.

They want a clip that can be exported without proprietary software, with an accurate time stamp, from a recorder whose clock was right. They want a retention period long enough that an incident reported a fortnight late is still there, which means setting the retention deliberately rather than accepting whatever the recorder shipped with. And they want the person identifiable, which is a question of camera height, angle and exposure at the doorway, not of megapixels.

The data protection side is the same conversation from the other end. If a camera sees a footpath, a shared yard or a neighbouring property, you need signage, a stated retention period, a named person who can retrieve footage and a plan for handling a request. We set that up at handover instead of leaving the recorder on its defaults, and it takes about ten minutes when it is done at the right time.

CCTV in Portadown, your questions answered

Yes. The Portadown and Craigavon corridor has extensive industrial and distribution units around Carn, Silverwood and Mahon Road. For these we design CCTV around perimeter, yard, loading bay and access-control points, with evidential-quality footage and, where useful, ANPR on entrances. We size to the site and can integrate with access control. Advanced Overwatch is SSAIB certificated (NIRE127) specifically for Intruder Alarm Systems, Visual Surveillance Systems (VSS) and Access Control Systems.

Yes. For rural homes and holdings toward Tandragee, Richhill and the Co Armagh townlands where fixed broadband is limited, we use 4G-connected and solar-powered CCTV so yards, sheds and lane entrances are covered without a wired network, with mobile viewing. We size the system to the property.

Yes, it is the main tool for it. Shoplifting and anti-social behaviour are consistently among the largest recorded categories locally, and both are deterred by a visible camera and documented with evidential-quality footage during trading, which an intruder alarm cannot do while the shop is open. We design retail coverage around entrances, tills and aisles.

Yes. On distribution and industrial sites where vehicle movement needs recording we can add automatic number-plate recognition on entrances alongside perimeter and yard cameras, and integrate the lot with gated or door access. We confirm whether ANPR suits the site at survey.
