Home Security Systems Bangor
SSAIB certificated intruder alarms and CCTV, plus video door entry, for homes in Bangor, installed and maintained by one local Northern Ireland team.
Advanced Overwatch designs, installs, monitors and maintains home intruder alarms, CCTV and video door entry for households in Bangor and the places around it, from Ballyholme and Ward Park to Groomsport, Crawfordsburn and Conlig. We are an SSAIB certificated company, reference NIRE127. In Bangor we design a home system for the years ahead, not just for the next burglary: an alarm everyone in the house can set, a door you can answer safely, and a system family can keep an eye on from wherever they are. The survey is free and the written figure after it is the price. Call 028 7087 8077.

What usually brings a Bangor household to us
- Something has happened. A break-in on the street, a car taken from a driveway, or an old alarm that went off in the night and nobody could remember the code to stop it.
- Someone is starting to worry. A parent living alone, a house that will sit empty for a few weeks, or a knock at the door that you would rather see before you open it.
- Someone has asked for it. An insurer wants a graded alarm at renewal, or a lender or landlord has written a requirement into an agreement.
Whichever it is, the next step is the same: an engineer walks the house with the people who live in it and you get a written figure.
In Bangor, Design A Home System For The Next Twenty Years, Not The Next Burglary
Most home security is sold on the night of the break-in. The pitch is about the burglar, and the system is judged on how loud it is.
In Bangor that is the wrong test. Break-ins here are uncommon, and people tend to stay in their homes for a long time. The better question is whether the system will still suit the household in ten years: whether everyone can set it without thinking, whether it lets you get up in the night without setting it off, whether it shows you who is at the door, and whether the people who care about you can see what is happening when they are not there.
A system that fails those tests ends up switched off. A switched-off alarm protects nobody.
What The Figures Say About Bangor Homes
Bangor sits in the Ards and North Down council area, which has the oldest population in Northern Ireland. In the 2021 census, 22.1% of its residents were aged 65 or over, the highest share of any of the 11 councils and well above the Northern Ireland figure of 17.2%. That age group grew from 27,692 people in 2011 to 36,225 in 2021, an increase of almost a third.
The same census shows that 11.4% of households in Ards and North Down are families where everyone is of pension age, again the highest in Northern Ireland, against 7.9% across the country.
Burglary, by contrast, is rare. Police street-level data for Bangor shows 31 burglaries in the twelve months to July 2026, out of 3,202 recorded offences of all kinds, and that figure covers homes and businesses together. Across the wider Ards and North Down policing district, burglary was essentially flat at 103.
Rare is not never, and an alarm still matters. But it means the things that decide whether a Bangor home system is any good are mostly about everyday use, not about the night of the break-in.

An Alarm Anyone In The House Can Set, Now And Later
The most common fault we find in older home alarms is not a broken sensor. It is a system nobody in the house is confident using.
A four-digit code that has to be entered against a beeping countdown is fine for some people and a source of dread for others. So at survey we design the setting and unsetting around the people who actually live there:
- A fob or tag instead of a code, so setting the alarm is one press on the way out of the door.
- A keypad where it is easy to reach and read, by the door you really use, which in many Bangor homes is the back or side door, not the front.
- Setting and checking from a phone, for anyone who prefers that, with the keypad still there for anyone who does not.
- A clear sound and a clear light that tell you the alarm is set, so nobody has to wonder.
A home intruder alarm is graded and applied under PD 6662:2017 and the BS EN 50131 series. The grade comes from the survey: what is in the house, how exposed it is, and what your insurer asks for. We will explain which grade applies and why, and then make sure the system is one the household will actually use. For alarms on their own, see our burglar alarm installation in Bangor page and our intruder alarm advice articles.
Getting Up In The Night Without Setting It Off
An alarm that is only set when the house is empty leaves you unprotected at the time you are most vulnerable: asleep upstairs.
The answer is a night setting. The doors and the downstairs rooms are armed, while the bedrooms, the landing and the route to the bathroom are left clear, so getting up at three in the morning does not wake the street. We set this up with you at handover and make sure everyone in the house knows which setting to use at bedtime. If somebody’s needs change later, the setting can be changed too.
Seeing Who Is At The Door Before You Open It
For many Bangor households, the door is where security really happens. Callers, deliveries, tradespeople and the occasional person who is not who they say they are.
A video door entry system or video doorbell lets you see and speak to whoever is there before you open the door, from a screen inside or from your phone, whether you are upstairs, in the garden or away from home. You can tell a delivery driver where to leave a parcel without getting up, and you can decide not to answer at all.
The PSNI’s advice is to keep your house and car keys safe and away from doors and windows, and never to give keys to workmen or tradesmen. A door camera makes that easier to follow: you can talk to a caller without opening up, and you have a record of who came and when.
Family Who Live Elsewhere Can Still Keep An Eye On Things
A lot of Bangor homes have someone who cares about them living somewhere else: a son or daughter in Belfast, a relative across the water, a neighbour who holds a spare key.
With the householder’s agreement, most modern alarms and door cameras can be shared with more than one person. That means:
- An alert to a family member’s phone if the alarm is set off, or if it was not set when it should have been.
- A look at the door camera to see who called today.
- Different permissions for different people, so a relative can check the system without being able to change it.
None of this is surveillance of the person living there. It is set up with them, on their terms, and it can be changed at any time. For many families it is the difference between worrying and knowing.
Cameras For The Drive, The Path And The Back Door
Home CCTV is most useful where something actually happens: the driveway, the side path and the back door. A camera high on the front wall pointed at the street is the least useful kind.
Home CCTV designed to the BS EN 62676 series is specified for the spot it watches. At survey we look at whether a camera needs to capture a face at the door, a vehicle on the drive, or simply movement along a path at night, and choose and position each camera for that job. Footage should be easy to find and to share, with a correct clock, so you can show it to the police or your insurer without a struggle.
Neighbours matter here as much as the law. A camera on a semi-detached house in Bangor can easily take in next door’s drive or a path you share. If your cameras record only your own property, UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 treat that as household use. If they reach beyond it, you take on duties for that footage, and you may also take on a difficult conversation over the fence. We angle each camera and mask out what it should not see before we leave, and agree how long recordings are kept. Our guide to CCTV regulations in Northern Ireland has the detail, and if cameras are all you need, see our CCTV installation in Bangor page.
When The House Is Empty For A While
Every home sits empty sometimes: a fortnight away, a long visit to family, a spell when the person who lives there is staying somewhere else for a while.
That is when a system earns its keep, and when the arrangements around it matter most. The PSNI advises using timer switches to turn on some lights when it goes dark while you are away. On top of that, we make sure:
- Someone gets told if a door or window opens while the house is empty, whether that is you, a relative or a monitoring centre.
- Someone can check the cameras and the alarm status from wherever they are.
- Someone can get there if they need to, with the keyholder arrangements written down rather than assumed.
Who Finds Out When The Alarm Goes Off
The PSNI advises making sure your burglar alarm is installed properly and works. Part of working properly is deciding who responds, and in a household where people are older or often away, that decision matters more than the siren.
There are three broad choices. With an audible-only alarm, the siren is the whole plan, and it works only if a neighbour hears it and does something. With self-monitoring, the alarm messages your phone and the phones of anyone else you add, which suits families who are happy to be the first to know. With professional monitoring, a staffed centre receives the signal and works through a plan agreed in advance, ringing the keyholders you have named even if you cannot be reached. If you want the police to attend, the alarm needs confirmation under BS 8243:2021 and a PSNI Unique Reference Number, issued under the NPCC Police Response to Security Systems Policy 2015. Whichever you choose, the weak link is usually the keyholder list, so we help you pick people who live close enough to get there.
What Home Security Costs In Bangor, And What We Put In Writing
We do not quote a price on a web page. Two houses in Ballyholme can need different systems once you see the doors that are actually used, the back garden and who lives there.
Our promise is about certainty rather than a headline number. The survey costs nothing. Afterwards you receive one written price for the equipment, the fitting, the setting up and the handover, with each part explained so you can talk it through with family before deciding. That price does not move. If you later decide to add a camera or another fob, it is quoted separately and only goes ahead when you say so.
Several things move the price up or down: how many doors and easy-to-reach windows the house has, whether a wired or wireless design suits it, the alarm grade your insurer expects, whether anyone will be monitoring it, the number of cameras, and whether you add a video doorbell or door entry. A bungalow needing an alarm, a handful of fobs and one door camera is a very different job from a large detached house on a long drive, and the written price will show you exactly why.

Bangor Home Security FAQs
Is burglary common in Bangor?
No. Police street-level data for Bangor shows 31 burglaries in the twelve months to July 2026, out of 3,202 recorded offences of all kinds, and that count covers homes and businesses together. Across the Ards and North Down policing district, burglary was essentially flat at 103. That is low, not zero, so an alarm is still worth having. It also means the things that decide whether a home system is good in Bangor are mostly about everyday use: whether everyone can set it, whether you can answer the door safely, and whether family can see what is happening.
What is the easiest home alarm to use?
The easiest alarm is one designed around the people who live in the house. For many households that means setting and unsetting with a fob or tag rather than a code, a keypad by the door you actually use, a clear light and sound to confirm the alarm is set, and a night setting that lets you get up without setting it off. Phone control can be added for anyone who wants it. At survey we talk to everyone who will use the alarm, and at handover we make sure each of them can set and unset it confidently.
Can I get alerts from my parent's alarm on my own phone?
Usually yes, with your parent’s agreement. Most modern alarms and video doorbells can be shared with more than one person, so a relative can receive an alert if the alarm goes off or was not set, and can see who has called at the door. Each person can be given different permissions, so a family member can check the system without being able to change it. We set this up with the householder at installation, on their terms, and it can be changed at any time.
Will a home CCTV camera break data protection rules?
Not if it is set up with care. Cameras that record only your own house, drive and garden count as household use under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. Cameras that also capture next door’s drive, a shared path or the street bring duties for that footage, such as having a reason for recording it and handling requests for copies. On semi-detached and terraced houses this comes up often, so we angle each camera, mask out areas it should not see and agree a retention period with you before we leave.
Do you have an office in Bangor?
No. Advanced Overwatch has one office, in Coleraine, and one team covers Bangor and the surrounding area from there. We would rather say that plainly than list a Bangor address that is really a phone number. One number reaches us: 028 7087 8077.
What does SSAIB certification cover?
Advanced Overwatch is an SSAIB certificated company, reference NIRE127. SSAIB is a certification body for the electronic security and telecare sectors, and our certification covers CCTV, access control and intruder alarms. It means our work in those areas is audited by an independent body against the relevant standards rather than self-declared, which is what insurers and the PSNI Unique Reference Number scheme look for. Quality management is certified to ISO 9001, environmental management to ISO 14001, information security to ISO 27001 and occupational health and safety to ISO 45001.
