Business Security Systems Magherafelt

SSAIB certificated CCTV, intruder alarms and access control for businesses in Magherafelt, installed and maintained by one local Northern Ireland team.

Advanced Overwatch designs, installs and maintains commercial CCTV, intruder alarms and access control for businesses in Magherafelt, from the shops and offices around the Diamond, Broad Street, Market Street and Queen Street to the premises along Moneymore Road, Castledawson Road and Ballyronan Road. We are an SSAIB certificated installer, established in 2017. Magherafelt is a quiet town for business crime, so we build systems that earn their keep on ordinary days and are checked so they work on the rare night they are needed.

Magherafelt Is A Quiet Town For Business Crime. Plan For That.

Magherafelt is the biggest town in the south of County Londonderry and the hub that the villages around it come into to shop, bank, work and do business. It is also, by the published police figures, a quiet place to run a business. Break-ins are rare. Shoplifting is modest. Most of what gets recorded is anti-social behaviour and violence, not crime against property.

That changes what a good security system is for. In a busy city centre a system earns its keep by dealing with frequent incidents. In Magherafelt it earns its keep in two other ways:

  • On ordinary days, by answering the everyday questions every business has: who opened up, what happened in the car park, whether that delivery really arrived, who was in the stockroom.
  • On the rare bad night, by actually working, after months or even years in which nobody has needed it and nobody has checked it.

A system that is never used is a system nobody notices failing. That is the real risk for a Magherafelt business, and it is the one this page is about.

What The Police Figures Say About Magherafelt

We pulled twelve months of street-level data from the police data service, September 2025 to August 2026, for Magherafelt and its immediate edges.

  • 791 recorded offences and incidents across the town in a year.
  • 14 were burglaries, under 2 per cent, and that figure covers homes as well as businesses.
  • 32 were shoplifting, about 4 per cent. Ten of those were recorded on just two roads, Station Road and Ballyronan Road, five each.
  • 78 were criminal damage and arson, about 10 per cent.
  • 5 were vehicle crime across the whole year.
  • 296 were anti-social behaviour and 271 were violent crime, together over 70 per cent of everything recorded.

To put that in proportion: fourteen burglaries in a year, across every home and business in a town of around 9,000 people, is roughly one a month.

Two honest caveats. The street-level service publishes approximate locations snapped to nearby points, not exact addresses, and about a third of the incidents carried no street name at all, so these figures describe Magherafelt as a whole, not your premises. And a low number is a reason for a sensibly sized system, not for no system. One break-in to a unit full of stock or tools is expensive, and the insurer will still ask what you had in place.

Most Days, Your Cameras Answer Ordinary Questions

Ask a Magherafelt business owner when they last looked back at their CCTV and the answer is rarely “after a break-in”. It is usually something like this:

  • A scrape in the car park. A customer says their car was damaged outside your premises. Footage settles it in two minutes, one way or the other.
  • A delivery dispute. A supplier says they delivered, you say they did not, or the count was short. A camera on the delivery door is the record.
  • A slip or trip claim. Someone says they fell on your floor or your step. A clear recording of what actually happened is worth a great deal to you and your insurer.
  • A till that does not balance. A camera over the till, with the right time stamp, lets you check the transaction rather than wonder.
  • Who opened up and who locked up. An alarm and access control log shows which code or fob was used and when, without anyone having to remember.

None of this needs a lot of cameras. It needs the right few, in the right places, recording clearly, with footage you can find and export quickly. That is how we design a business system in Magherafelt: around the questions you will actually ask it.

The Rare Night: Will Your System Work When It Finally Matters?

In a quiet town, an intruder alarm can go years without a genuine activation, and a camera system can go months without anyone scrolling back through it. That is exactly when things fail without anyone noticing.

The common silent failures we find on surveys:

  • A recorder that stopped recording. The hard drive failed or filled up weeks ago. The cameras still show a live picture on the screen, so nobody realised.
  • Cameras that are fine by day and useless at night. Infrared that has faded, a lens fogged or covered in cobweb, a security light that blinds the camera, or a view blocked by something that grew or was stacked in front of it.
  • The wrong time on the recorder. Footage that is an hour out after the clocks changed, which makes it harder to use as evidence.
  • Alarm batteries past their life. The panel and the external bell rely on standby batteries, and they do not last for ever.
  • Detectors that no longer see the whole room, because shelving, stock or a partition went in after the alarm did.
  • A keyholder list nobody has updated, with phone numbers for people who have changed jobs, changed phones or left.

All of these are cheap to fix and very expensive to discover on the night. Regular maintenance is the part of a security system that stops them happening, and in a quiet town it matters more, not less.

The Diamond, Broad Street And The Town Centre

Magherafelt’s centre still follows the shape it took after the Plantation, with the Diamond at its heart and Broad Street running down towards the Bridewell, the old court-house and gaol that now houses the library and tourist centre. Around it, on Market Street, Queen Street, Church Street and Rainey Street, are many of the shops, cafes and offices that serve the whole district.

For a town-centre business the useful questions are mostly daytime ones:

  • A camera on the door at head height and close range, so a face is recognisable on the way in and out. One good door camera is worth more than several wide shots of the shop floor.
  • A camera over the till or counter, to settle the ordinary questions above.
  • Access control or a simple coded lock on the door to the back, so the stockroom, office and rear exit stay staff-only while you are trading.
  • An alarm on the whole premises, including any back door onto a lane or yard, set by the last person out.

Many town-centre buildings also have offices or flats on the upper floors, sometimes reached by a separate door. Your alarm and cameras should cover your part of the building and leave other occupiers’ doors and windows out of your recordings.

We design CCTV with reference to the BS EN 62676 series for video surveillance systems. Our CCTV installation in Magherafelt page covers the installation detail.

The Roads Out: Moneymore Road, Castledawson Road And Ballyronan Road

Since the bypass opened in 2016, through-traffic on the A31 skirts the eastern edge of the town, linking Moneymore Road and Castledawson Road, and the old road through the centre became the B40. The business premises on the roads out of town, the showrooms, yards, workshops, depots and stores, are a different job from a shop on the Diamond.

These sites are typically empty from evening to morning, often hold their most valuable things outdoors or in a separate building, and are reached by vehicle. For them we usually recommend:

  • A camera on the entrance positioned to capture a vehicle and a face, not just a wide view of the yard.
  • Detection on the outside of the building, on shutters, doors and the yard where it makes sense, so the alarm reacts before someone is inside.
  • Separate alarm areas, so a store, workshop or yard can be armed while people are still working in the office.
  • Phone alerts with a short clip, so whoever gets the alert can see what set it off before deciding what to do.

The figures for these roads are small. That is good news, but a yard full of tools, materials or stock is the kind of site where one loss costs more than the system that would have prevented it.

Who Holds The Keys: Codes, Fobs And Staff Changes

Many smaller businesses, in Magherafelt as anywhere, are family-run or employ a small, settled team. That is a strength, and it also means security habits form and then nobody revisits them. The same alarm code for ten years. Spare keys with a former employee. A keyholder list with the owner’s parents on it.

A good system makes this easy to keep tidy:

  • Individual codes or fobs for each person, so the log shows who opened and closed, and one person leaving means cancelling one code, not changing everyone’s.
  • Access control on the doors that matter, where fobs can be added or cancelled the same day, without calling a locksmith.
  • A keyholder list that is checked, with names and numbers that are current, so an alarm at night reaches someone who can act.
  • Remote access only for the people who should have it, on their own phones, removed when they leave.

We set this up at installation and check it at every maintenance visit.

After Hours: An Intruder Alarm Sized To What You Hold

Burglary is a small share of recorded crime in Magherafelt, and that is a reason to size your alarm honestly rather than to go without one. It is still the backbone of after-hours protection, and most commercial insurers will want to know what you have.

Commercial intruder alarms are graded, and the grade should follow from what you hold and what it would cost to lose it. We design and install to the BS EN 50131 series as applied in the UK through PD 6662:2017. A workshop full of tools on the edge of town will sit at a different grade from a cafe on Broad Street, and it is worth being told which you are rather than guessing upwards.

An unmonitored alarm makes a noise and relies on someone nearby to act. A monitored alarm goes to a receiving centre where a person acts on it to an agreed procedure. Where police response is part of that, it runs under the URN scheme, with alarm confirmation handled in line with BS 8243:2021 and response governed by the NPCC Police Response to Security Systems Policy 2015. Regular maintenance matters here too, because false alarms put a URN at risk, and an alarm that has not been looked at for years is more likely to produce them. Our burglar alarm installation in Magherafelt page has more on the alarm side.

Your Footage Is A Legal Record

A business recording people is a data controller under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. The domestic exemption does not apply to you. There is no CCTV register to sign up to, but you do need signage naming who is recording and why, a retention period you chose deliberately, access limited to the right people, and a process for giving someone a copy of their own footage within a month of them asking. Most businesses also owe the data protection fee to the Information Commissioner’s Office.

This matters even more when you use footage for ordinary disputes, because the person in the recording may ask for it. Our CCTV regulations guide for Northern Ireland sets out the detail, and we settle it with you at handover rather than leaving it as homework.

We Already Look After Public CCTV Across Mid Ulster

Advanced Overwatch installs, maintains and supports the CCTV systems of public bodies including Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Mid Ulster District Council, the NHS and more.

For Mid Ulster District Council, the council for Magherafelt, our work covers CCTV monitoring, maintenance and installation across the district.

We mention it because public systems are held to a simple standard: they have to work every time someone needs to look back. That is the same standard we apply to a single shop or yard in Magherafelt, on a smaller scale.

Who Calls Us About Commercial Security In Magherafelt

Most enquiries land in one of three places.

  • Something has already happened. A break-in to a yard or store, damage to the premises, or footage that turned out to be missing or useless when you went to look for it.
  • Nothing has happened, and you want to be sure it stays that way. You have opened new premises, taken on staff, or realised nobody has checked the system in years.
  • Somebody has asked you to. An insurer, a landlord or a lease wants to know what security you have and who maintains it, and you do not have the paperwork.

All three start the same way: a free survey, in person, at your premises.

What Business Security Costs In Magherafelt

We quote after a free survey rather than publishing a price list, because a two-camera system for a shop off the Diamond and a monitored alarm with external cameras for a yard on Castledawson Road are genuinely different jobs.

The things that move the number are how much of your existing equipment can be kept, how many camera positions you really need, how much of the work is outdoors, how many doors go on access control, whether the alarm is monitored, and the annual maintenance that keeps it reliable. Where existing equipment is sound, repairing and maintaining it is often far cheaper than replacing it, and we will tell you so.

What you get after the survey is a written, itemised, fixed quote. The figure on the page is the figure you pay.

What Happens After You Contact Us

Magherafelt Business Security FAQs

No, by the published figures it is a quiet one. Street-level police data for Magherafelt from September 2025 to August 2026 shows 791 recorded offences and incidents, of which 14 were burglaries, 32 were shoplifting and 78 were criminal damage and arson. Locations are approximate and the burglary figure includes homes. A low figure is a reason to size a system sensibly, not to go without one: one break-in to a store or yard is expensive, insurers still ask what you have, and most days a business system is used to answer ordinary questions such as deliveries, car park incidents and who opened up.

It should answer the everyday questions a business has, and be ready for the rare night. Day to day that means a camera on the main door that records faces clearly, a camera over the till or counter, a view of the delivery door and car park, and alarm and access control logs that show which code or fob was used and when. Those recordings settle car park scrapes, delivery disputes, slip claims and till queries far more often than they deal with crime. After hours, an intruder alarm sized to what you hold, set by the last person out, covers the premises.

Have them checked regularly, because in a quiet town they can go months or years without being needed. The most common silent failures are a recorder that stopped recording, cameras that are clear by day but useless at night, the wrong time on the recorder, alarm standby batteries past their life, detectors blocked by shelving or stock, and a keyholder list with out-of-date numbers. A maintenance visit checks all of these. Advanced Overwatch also tests what is already installed during the free survey and tells you plainly what works.

No. Advanced Overwatch has one office, in Coleraine, and our own engineers travel to Magherafelt and the villages around it, including Castledawson, Moneymore, Maghera, Draperstown and Ballyronan, for surveys, installations and maintenance as a normal part of the week. To book a free survey, call 028 7087 8077.

Advanced Overwatch quotes after a free survey rather than publishing a price list, because a two-camera system for a town-centre shop and a monitored alarm with external cameras for a yard on the edge of town are very different jobs. The things that move the number are how much existing equipment can be kept, how many camera positions you really need, how much of the work is outdoors, how many doors go on access control, whether the alarm is monitored, and annual maintenance. After the survey you receive a written, itemised, fixed quote, and the figure on the page is the figure you pay.
