Cookstown Is a Long Town, and That Changes Where Cameras Go

Most towns spread outwards from a square. Cookstown does not. It runs in a more or less straight line for around a mile and a quarter, along a street that was laid out in the eighteenth century to be exceptionally wide and is reputedly one of the longest and widest main streets in Ireland. The industrial side of the town is linear too, strung out along the Sandholes Road a mile or two to the south.

That sounds like a piece of local trivia. It is actually the single biggest factor in how a camera system here should be designed.

Long, straight sites create two specific problems. The first is wide frontage: a shop or showroom on James Street or Oldtown Street can present twenty or thirty metres to the street, and a single camera trying to cover all of it ends up with a picture where everyone is a smudge at the edges. The second is depth: a unit on the Sandholes Road corridor often has a yard, a turning area and a gate that sit a long way back from the building the cameras are mounted on.

In both cases the instinct is to buy more cameras. Usually the better answer is fewer cameras in better places. Where a camera sits, what it is asked to do, and how wide a view it is given will decide whether your footage is useful, far more than the number on the box.

Who Calls Us About CCTV in Cookstown

Enquiries here arrive at one of three moments, and it is worth saying which one you are in when you call, because it changes what we look at first.

After something has happened.

A break-in, a theft from a yard, damage overnight, or an incident where the cameras were recording but the footage turned out to be unusable. The priority is cover that genuinely works, quickly, and a straight answer about why the old system did not do its job.

Before anything has happened.

A new unit, an extension, a change of use, or a growing sense that a system fitted a decade ago has quietly stopped being fit for purpose. Nothing has gone wrong, and the whole point of calling is to keep it that way.

Because somebody has asked you to.

An insurer, a landlord, a franchise agreement, a licensing condition or an audit wants a documented system fitted by a certified installer. This is one of the most common reasons a commercial survey gets booked.

Whichever one applies, the route is the same: a free survey of the site, then a fixed written price.

What CCTV Costs in Cookstown, and Why We Quote After the Survey

We do not publish a price list, and we would be suspicious of anyone who does. A number on a website that has never seen your building is a guess, and guesses have a habit of growing once the work starts.

What the price actually depends on is straightforward: how many camera positions the site genuinely needs, what each one is being asked to do, whether cabling can follow existing routes or has to be pulled through new ones, and how long you need footage kept for. A three-camera domestic system and a twelve-camera yard installation with number plate capture at the gate are different jobs with different prices, and neither of them is well served by a headline figure.

So we survey first, then quote in writing, then stick to it. If the survey shows you need less than you thought, we will tell you that too.

Covering a Long Retail Frontage on the Main Street

The retail pitch running through James Street, William Street and Oldtown Street, along with the units at Station Square Retail Park on Molesworth Street, shares a common shape: wide shopfronts facing a very broad street.

The usual mistake is one camera at the centre of the frontage, pulled back wide enough to see the whole thing. It produces a picture where you can tell that something happened but not who did it. The alternative is to split the job. One camera covers the door at a tight enough angle to get a usable face as people come through it, and a second covers the wider frontage and the approach. That is two cameras doing two clear jobs instead of one camera doing neither.

The same logic applies to the till point, the stockroom door and the rear service access, which on many of these premises opens onto an entirely different street from the shopfront.

Covering a Deep Yard on the Sandholes Road Corridor

Derryloran Industrial Estate, Kilcronagh Business Park and Ballyreagh Industrial Estate sit along the Sandholes Road south of the town, and they are where most of Cookstown’s commercial and manufacturing premises are. The town has a substantial food processing and engineering base, with sites such as Karro Food Group, Dale Farm at Dunman and CDE Global all located in and around the town.

Yard sites raise a different problem from shopfronts. The gate is often fifty or a hundred metres from the nearest building, so the natural mounting point is nowhere near the thing you most want to see. A camera on the building will show you that a vehicle came in. It will rarely show you the registration.

That is usually solved with a dedicated camera at the entrance, set narrow and angled for plates rather than scenery, working alongside wider cameras that cover the yard itself. Lighting matters as much as the camera: a well-chosen position with poor light at three in the morning is still a poor position. On larger sites, the plant, the fuel store and the loading bays are each worth treating as separate questions rather than assuming a ring of cameras around the perimeter covers everything.

Farms and Rural Property Around Cookstown

A large share of the work around Cookstown is not in the town at all. It is out towards Coagh, Stewartstown, Pomeroy, Moneymore, Tullyhogue, Sandholes and the country towards the western shore of Lough Neagh at Ardboe.

Rural sites bring their own constraints. Buildings are scattered, cable runs between them are long, mains power is not always where you want a camera, and broadband can be slow enough that remote viewing needs to be set up carefully rather than assumed. Machinery, fuel, quads and trailers tend to be the targets, and they are usually kept in exactly the outbuildings that are furthest from the house.

We survey these sites the same way we survey a yard: work out the handful of positions that matter, cover the approach as well as the buildings, and be honest about where a camera will and will not earn its keep.

Crime in Mid Ulster: the Honest Picture

It would be easy to open a page like this with a frightening number. The real figures do not support it, so we will give you the actual ones instead.

According to PSNI police recorded crime statistics for the twelve months to 31 July 2026, the Mid Ulster policing district recorded 97 burglaries, down from 134 in the previous twelve months, a fall of around 28 per cent. Total recorded crime across the district was broadly flat. These are district figures covering Cookstown, Dungannon and Magherafelt, not a Cookstown town figure, because no town-level figure is published.

Burglary in Mid Ulster is falling, and that is genuinely good news. Most people who call us are not calling out of fear. They are calling because they want to see what is happening at a property they cannot always be at, because an insurer has asked, or because something specific has already gone missing. All of those are perfectly good reasons, and none of them requires a scare story.

Why an SSAIB certificated Installer Matters

Anybody can sell and fit cameras. There is no licence required to do it, which is precisely why the certification is worth checking.

Advanced Overwatch is SSAIB certificated (NIRE127) specifically for Intruder Alarm Systems, Visual Surveillance Systems (VSS) and Access Control Systems. In practice, certification means an independent body inspects how we design, install and document systems, and that we can be held to that standard rather than simply asserting it.

We also hold ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 27001 and ISO 45001 certification, covering quality management, environmental management, information security and occupational health and safety.

Insurers and auditors increasingly ask who fitted a system and to what standard. Having a certified installer on the paperwork is a good deal easier than explaining after the fact.

We Work for Public Bodies in Mid Ulster

Advanced Overwatch installs, maintains and supports the CCTV systems of public bodies including Mid Ulster District Council, Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council, the NHS and more.

Our public-sector work for Mid Ulster District Council covers CCTV installation, maintenance and monitoring across the Mid Ulster region, which is the local authority area Cookstown sits within. Public-sector work is held to a standard of documentation, data handling and reliability that is a good deal less forgiving than most private contracts, and the same engineers and the same processes handle our commercial and domestic work.

Wired or Wireless: Which Suits Your Cookstown Site?

Most systems we fit in Cookstown are wired, but not all of them, and the right answer depends on the building rather than on preference.

Wired cameras Wireless cameras
Best for New builds, commercial units, yards, anywhere cable can be run Listed and older buildings, rented premises, outbuildings where cabling is impractical
Power Usually powered over the same cable that carries the video Needs mains nearby, or battery with a charging routine
Reliability Not affected by wifi congestion or interference Depends on signal strength and network quality across the site
Image quality Consistent, and holds up at higher resolutions Can vary if the connection is weak
Disruption to fit More: cable routes have to be planned and run Less: quicker and tidier where cabling would be invasive
Long-term cost Lower once installed Battery and network maintenance on some setups

On a rural site with scattered outbuildings we often end up with a mix: wired where the runs are sensible, wireless where pulling a cable across a yard would cost more than the camera.

If you run CCTV at a business, you are handling personal data, and UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 apply. In practice that means a few things you should get right from the start.

You need clear signage telling people the area is covered and who operates the system. You need a sensible retention period rather than keeping everything indefinitely, and a way of actually deleting footage once that period passes. You need to be able to respond if someone asks for footage of themselves, which is a subject access request and normally has to be dealt with within one calendar month. And you should avoid pointing cameras at areas beyond what you need to cover, particularly neighbouring property and public space.

Domestic CCTV is treated differently. If your cameras only cover your own property, the household exemption generally applies. Once a camera captures the street or a neighbour’s garden, that changes, and it is worth getting the angles right at the survey rather than after a complaint.

The Information Commissioner’s Office publishes plain-English guidance on video surveillance, and we will walk you through what applies to your setup as part of the survey.

Technically, the BS EN 62676 series of video surveillance standards describes how image quality is classified according to what the camera is meant to achieve, from simply monitoring an area through to detecting, recognising and identifying an individual. That distinction is the useful part for a buyer: a camera specified only to monitor a yard will not necessarily give you an image that identifies a face, and knowing which you are paying for avoids disappointment later. Where a system is detector activated and monitored remotely by an alarm receiving centre rather than recorded on site, that is a different specification again, covered by BS 8418, and a different conversation at survey stage.

Maintenance and Aftercare

A camera system is not a thing you fit and forget. Lenses get dirty, spiders build webs directly in front of infrared illuminators, hard drives fill up or fail, firmware needs updating, and a camera knocked out of alignment by a delivery lorry will keep recording perfectly, just not of anything useful.

Almost every case we see of unusable footage comes back to one of those, not to the cameras being cheap. Servicing catches them before the day you need the recording.

We service what we fit, and we will also take on systems installed by somebody else, provided the equipment is sound enough to be worth maintaining. If it is not, we will say so rather than sell you a service contract on something that will not last.

Areas We Cover Around Cookstown

We cover Cookstown town and the surrounding Mid Ulster area, including Coagh, Stewartstown, Pomeroy, Moneymore, Tullyhogue, Sandholes, Ardboe and the country out towards the western shore of Lough Neagh, along with the Sandholes Road industrial corridor and the outlying townlands.

Advanced Overwatch has one office, at 1st Floor Beresford House, 2 Beresford Road, Coleraine, BT52 1GE. Our engineers travel to Cookstown from there, roughly an hour down the A29. We do not have a branch in the town, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

You can also read about our CCTV installation service across Northern Ireland, our intruder alarm installation, or our nearby CCTV installation in Magherafelt and CCTV installation in Dungannon. A full list of the towns we serve is on our where we cover page.

Frequently Asked Questions About CCTV in Cookstown

How much does CCTV installation cost in Cookstown?

It depends on how many camera positions the site needs, what each camera is being asked to do, whether cabling can follow existing routes, and how long footage needs to be retained. We do not publish a list price because a figure quoted without seeing the building is a guess. We survey the property free of charge, then give you a fixed price in writing that does not change afterwards.

Do I need planning permission for CCTV in Cookstown?

For most standard installations on a home or commercial building, no. It becomes a question worth asking if the building is listed, if it sits in a conservation area, or if you are proposing a large or prominent external installation. Because that varies by property, we would always suggest confirming with Mid Ulster District Council, whose Cookstown office is on Burn Road, before committing to anything unusual. Separately, a camera overlooking a neighbour’s property is a data protection matter rather than a planning one, and we will look at those angles during the survey.

Can I view my Cookstown CCTV from my phone?

Yes, on essentially every system we fit. It needs a working internet connection at the property, which is worth checking on rural sites around Coagh, Pomeroy or Ardboe where broadband can be slower. If the connection is weak, we will set the system up so recording continues locally regardless and remote viewing works within the limits of the line rather than promising something the connection cannot deliver.

How long is CCTV footage kept?

That is a decision made at design stage and it should be a deliberate one. Thirty days is a common commercial retention period, but the right answer depends on your circumstances and on what you can justify under data protection law. The storage in the recorder is sized around that decision, which is one reason it comes up at the survey rather than afterwards.

Do you cover the industrial estates on the Sandholes Road?

Yes. Derryloran, Kilcronagh and Ballyreagh are all within our normal working area, along with the rest of the Sandholes Road corridor. Yard and perimeter sites are a large part of what we do in Mid Ulster, and they usually need a different camera layout from a shopfront, with attention to gate entrances, vehicle approaches and lighting after dark.

Is Advanced Overwatch certified to install CCTV?

Yes. Advanced Overwatch is SSAIB certificated (NIRE127) specifically for Intruder Alarm Systems, Visual Surveillance Systems (VSS) and Access Control Systems. We are certified to ISO 27001 for information security, which matters when we hold your footage, and to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. There is no legal requirement for a CCTV installer to be certified, which is exactly why it is worth asking any company you are considering.
