App-connected control

App functions depend on the selected equipment, connectivity and permissions. An app does not by itself provide an operator response.

Larger and multi-site systems

Discuss zones, user access and integration requirements with us. These are specification decisions, not a fourth connection type.

Decide what should happen
after an activation

The response arrangement is a separate decision from whether the detectors are wired or wireless.

Sounder-led response

A local alarm sounds at the property. Decide who can hear it and what action they can take; attendance is not guaranteed.

Monitored response

Intruder signals go to our monitoring partner’s NSI Gold certified Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC), following the agreed escalation plan.

Response options and eligibility must be agreed for the system and premises.

Insurance Compliance & SSAIB Certification

Advanced Overwatch is SSAIB certificated (NIRE127) specifically for Intruder Alarm Systems, Visual Surveillance Systems (VSS) and Access Control Systems.

Many insurers require an intruder alarm installed and maintained by an SSAIB certificated or NSI approved company. If you are not sure what your own policy asks for, bring it to the survey and we will tell you plainly whether your system meets it.

As an SSAIB certificated installer, Advanced Overwatch provides:

  • Installation certificates confirming compliance with BS EN 50131 and PD 6662
  • Annual maintenance certificates required by most insurers
  • URN registration for PSNI police response
  • Direct liaison with your insurance company if required

If you are unsure whether your current alarm system meets your insurance requirements, we can carry out a free inspection and advise on any necessary upgrades.

Burglar alarm installation questions

The cost of a commercial intruder alarm depends on the size and layout of the premises, the number of detection zones, the grade your insurer asks for, and whether you want monitoring or app control. Because those factors vary so much from one building to the next, we price every system after a free site survey and give you a written quotation with the scope spelled out. Call us on 028 7087 8077 to arrange one.

Most do. In a survey of more than 400 convicted burglars by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, about six in ten said they would look for another target if an alarm was present. An alarm works best on top of good locks and lighting: research using the Crime Survey for England and Wales found that locks with internal and external lights gave the best value, so an alarm should add to them.

Burglars most dislike layered security they cannot predict, a monitored intruder alarm, visible CCTV, external lighting and secure access control working together, so there is no easy way in and a high chance of being recorded or challenged. Advanced Overwatch designs integrated systems of this kind under SSAIB certification (NIRE127) for homes and businesses in Northern Ireland.

Advanced Overwatch is a Northern Ireland alarm company covering more than 50 towns right across Northern Ireland, so wherever you are, Belfast, Derry, Newry, Craigavon or the surrounding countryside, your intruder alarm is designed, installed and maintained by the same accountable team.

A good local alarm company knows the area, installs to recognised standards and stays reachable after the sale. Advanced Overwatch is independently SSAIB certificated (NIRE127), and looks after every alarm it fits with one local team rather than a national franchise or call centre.

Look for independently verified certification, evidence the installer can design to the correct system grade for your risk level, and a clear maintenance and response-time agreement, rather than choosing on price alone.

Check certification directly with the certification body rather than taking a website badge at face value; SSAIB certificated installers, for example, can be verified against their registration number on the SSAIB supplier register. Ask what BS EN 50131 grade the installer would specify for your premises, since a higher grade generally means stronger tamper resistance and detection but comes with different cost and monitoring implications, and this should come from a proper risk assessment, not a generic quote. If insurance-graded monitoring matters to you, ask whether the installer offers dual-path signalling to an Alarm Receiving Centre, and whether they can register the system for a PSNI Unique Reference Number so that a confirmed alarm gets a police response. Ask which alarm brands and technologies they install and support, whether wired, wireless or hybrid, and how long they’ve supported those product lines, since ongoing parts availability matters as much as the initial installation.

Just as importantly, ask about what happens after the system is switched on: guaranteed response times for faults and false alarms, whether call-outs are included in a maintenance contract or charged separately, and whether you’ll receive commissioning documentation confirming the system meets the standard it was designed to.

The core difference between a wired and wireless intruder alarm is how the detectors, sensors, and control panel communicate with each other. A wired system connects all components via physical cables installed through the fabric of the building, while a wireless system uses encrypted radio frequency signals to transmit between devices.

Wired systems are generally preferred for permanent commercial installations. Physical connections are not susceptible to radio interference, do not depend on batteries in individual sensors, and are inherently more difficult to jam or disrupt. For higher-security commercial premises, buildings requiring police response capability, or sites with significant assets at risk, a wired system is typically the preferred choice.

Wireless systems are well suited to retrofits, listed buildings, or premises where running cables would cause unacceptable disruption or damage to the building fabric. Modern wireless systems have improved considerably and now offer encrypted radio links, supervised signal paths, dual-path communication to the alarm receiving centre, and anti-tamper detection built into each device. For many residential properties and lighter commercial applications in Northern Ireland, a quality wireless system delivers genuine security performance with much less installation disruption.

The right choice depends on your premises type, your required security grade, and whether your system needs to be monitored by an alarm receiving centre. Advanced Overwatch installs both wired and wireless intruder alarms and recommends the most appropriate solution following a free site survey.

Our engineers design systems to your specific risk profile, from a residential property to a large commercial site requiring a police-response-capable installation. Visit our contact page to arrange a free survey and quote.

For most businesses, yes. A monitored alarm has a monthly fee and a bells-only system has no ongoing cost, but many commercial insurers require monitoring, so check your policy before you choose.

With monitoring, an activation goes to our partner’s NSI Gold certified Alarm Receiving Centre, which follows the plan agreed with you: contacting keyholders and, where the system qualifies for police response, the PSNI. With bells only, you rely on someone hearing the alarm and acting on it. Police response depends on the area, the time of day and whether the activation is confirmed, and no installer can promise a time on the PSNI’s behalf.

For homes, monitoring is optional. For business premises, isolated properties and sites holding cash or high-value stock, it is usually the right choice.

A certificated security company such as an SSAIB certificated installer is vetted, insured and inspected against a British Standard before you ever get a quote, while a trade-lead marketplace like MyBuilder or Bark simply connects you with tradespeople who pay to receive leads, with no independent check that any individual installer meets a recognised alarm standard.

SSAIB certification means a company’s processes, from initial design through installation and ongoing monitoring, have been independently assessed against BS EN 50131 and related standards, and are subject to periodic re-inspection to keep that certification. That matters practically because most insurers and the PSNI’s Unique Reference Number monitored-response scheme expect an alarm to have been installed and maintained by a company that can demonstrate this kind of certificated, standards-based process, not simply an alarm fitted by a tradesperson. A marketplace platform, by contrast, is a directory and lead-generation service: individual tradespeople listed on it may or may not hold any security-specific certification, and the platform itself doesn’t design, install, monitor or guarantee the system, it just makes the introduction.

For a monitored, insurance-recognised intruder alarm, the practical difference shows up if something goes wrong: a certificated company has a formal complaints and quality process behind its certification, while a marketplace listing has no equivalent standards body to escalate to beyond the platform’s own review system.

Advanced Overwatch is SSAIB certificated (NIRE127) specifically for Intruder Alarm Systems, Visual Surveillance Systems (VSS) and Access Control Systems. Intruder alarm monitoring is provided through our monitoring partner’s NSI Gold certified ARC. Police response depends on the system and current eligibility requirements. ISO 9001, 14001, 27001 and 45001 certified. Call 028 7087 8077 or visit our contact page for a free site survey.

The grades come from EN 50131 and describe the level of risk the system is built to resist. Grade 2 assumes an intruder with some knowledge and basic tools, and is what most homes and small commercial premises are specified to. Grade 3 assumes an experienced intruder with more capable tools, so it carries stronger tamper protection and detection and suits higher value commercial sites. Your insurer may set which applies.

A bells only alarm makes noise locally and relies on somebody nearby hearing it and acting. A monitored alarm sends the signal to an Alarm Receiving Centre that follows an agreed response plan, which can include calling your keyholders or requesting a police response where the system qualifies. Bells only can suit an occupied house in a built up street. For business premises, isolated properties and anywhere an insurer specifies it, monitoring is what changes the outcome. Our intruder and fire alarm monitoring runs through a partner NSI Gold certified Alarm Receiving Centre.

Only if your insurer requires it or your risk justifies it. A police response is not automatic: the system has to be designed and installed to the relevant standards by a certificated company, registered for a unique reference number, and the premises has to qualify. We can tell you at the survey whether yours does, and we can register a qualifying monitored alarm for police response.
