Understanding the figures
Your questions
answered
Where do these figures come from?
They come from NIFRS annual reports and published Freedom of Information responses. The source documents are linked at the bottom of this page.
Do the figures cover my town exactly?
A town selection shows fire incidents across its council area first. Where available, separate station-area figures show fires, false alarms and other incident types. Council, station and town boundaries are different.
Why do the reporting periods differ?
NIFRS annual reports and individual information responses cover different periods. Every chart shows its own dates. The council comparison uses only figures for the same period.
What does a primary fire mean?
A primary fire involves a building or vehicle, a casualty or rescue, or attendance by five or more appliances. Secondary fires are generally smaller outdoor fires without casualties or property involvement.
Does a lower figure mean an area is safer?
Counts and population-based rates describe recorded incidents across an area. They do not establish the fire risk in an individual property.
How are the figures kept up to date?
The live tool checks official NIFRS publications automatically. New or revised figures replace the previous dataset after validation. Each series retains its reporting period, so older published data is clearly dated.
