Both figures use the identical 1-mile town-centre measure, so this comparison is like-for-like. Bigger towns naturally record more incidents.

This monthly figure places it among the HIGHER third of the 51 Northern Ireland towns with published data for that month, on the same one mile measure.

These are counts within 1-mile circles, not population-adjusted crime rates or a ranking of personal safety.

Whole-town figures sum the official police recorded crime tables for the electoral wards covering Newtownards, published by NISRA. Council figures cover the whole council area. Both are financial-year totals, separate from the monthly 1-mile measure.

The annual council series uses burglary, vehicle offences, robbery and criminal damage groupings. The monthly town-centre security-related subtotal uses a broader set of categories. These definitions differ, so do not compare the two subtotals as the same measure.

The two numbers measure different ground. The count of 188 covers one month, August 2026, inside a one-mile circle drawn on Newtownards town centre. The 5,621 is every crime PSNI recorded across the whole Ards and North Down district in 2025/26, an area covering several towns and a lot of open country. Neither is wrong and neither replaces the other. Our method notes explain why we never divide one by the other to make a rate.

It is worth reading in proportion. Burglary was 4 of the 188 crimes recorded inside the one-mile circle that month, and 97 of them fell in the security-related group as a whole. Burglary is the category a monitored intruder alarm and a camera covering the approach are built for, so a small number does not make an alarm pointless. It makes the design question a practical one: which doors, which approach, and what happens when the alarm activates. Our survey looks at the property rather than the statistic.

Across all of Newtownards, the official series recorded 1,713 crimes in 2025/26, up 3.9% on 2024/25 and up 2.1% against 2015/16. That is the long view for the whole town, while the one-mile centre count above, 188 crimes in August 2026, is the short view for the middle of it. Reading both is more useful than either on its own. We have been designing and installing systems in Northern Ireland since 2017, and the site survey costs nothing. Our CCTV Installation Newtownards page covers what that looks like locally.

Discuss security systems for your property

A survey considers your premises, access and existing systems. Local crime figures provide context; they do not decide what your property needs.
