Public Address Systems

Paging, announcements and background music for retail, hospitality and industrial sites across Northern Ireland. Zoned properly, tuned to the room, and tied into the screens and tills you run already.

Sound that reaches the right part of the building

A shop floor wants music people can talk over. A stockroom wants a page that carries above a roller door. A yard wants speech still clear thirty metres from the speaker. One amplifier and a row of identical ceiling speakers will not do all three, so every job starts with a walk of the building.

Advanced Overwatch has fitted audio and security systems since 2017. We design, install, commission and maintain the whole chain, sources, amplifiers, cabling, speakers and controls, across Northern Ireland from our base in Coleraine.

Zones, and why the plan starts with them

A zone is any area you want to control on its own: sales floor, deli counter, warehouse, staff room, car park. Splitting them lets you page the warehouse without a customer at the checkout hearing it, and keeps the staff room off the aisle volume.

Zones also decide the amplifier and the matrix, so be honest at survey about how the building is really used, including the area you open next year. Adding one later is easy only if the cabling was sized for it.

What goes into a PA and background music system

Most systems share the same parts. What changes is the room, the noise in it and the number of zones you want to run.

Sources and paging points

Usually a streaming player or a licensed music service, a microphone station at reception, and a set of recorded announcements. Day to day control is a wall panel or an app: pick the zone, page, or fire off a stored message within the volume limits set at commissioning.

Amplifiers and the matrix

The amplifier drives the speakers and the matrix decides which source reaches which zone. Paging takes priority, so an announcement ducks the music and hands the zone back. We size in headroom, because an amplifier held flat out all day gets replaced early.

Speakers chosen for the space

Ceiling speakers suit shops, offices and restaurants with a suspended ceiling. Pendants and cabinets suit exposed ceilings and warehouse retail. Horn speakers cover yards and production areas where speech has to beat machinery. Most run on a 100 volt line, so each area takes its own tap.

Background music, and the licence that goes with it

If music is played where the public or your staff can hear it, the site needs a music licence. In the UK that is normally PPL PRS, arranged by the business itself, and it covers a radio or a streaming account as much as a commercial music service.

We do not supply the licence, but we flag it at survey, because new premises get caught by it. The same system carries the announcements that run a day: opening and closing calls, offers timed to the busy hour, shift reminders.

What this system is, and what it is not

A music and paging system is a communication system. It is not a voice alarm or evacuation system and we do not offer it as one. Voice alarm is life safety equipment with its own standard, monitored circuits and battery backup.

So we keep the two apart on site. PA cabling and speakers go in clear of the detection equipment, and where a building already has an evacuation system we make sure our amplifier cannot be mistaken for it. If you are unsure which of the two you need, ask at survey.

Retail, hospitality and industrial: what changes

Retail and hospitality

In retail the job is even cover at a low level, no hot spot under a speaker and no dead aisle, plus a page that reaches the stockroom without booming across the tills. In hospitality it is separation: bar, restaurant and function room each want their own source and volume.

Warehouse and industrial sites

Warehouse and industrial sites are a different problem. Noise is high and surfaces hard, so speech has to stay intelligible over racking and machinery. That means fewer, better placed horn speakers, higher taps, and ambient sensing where noise changes.

Installation, commissioning and aftercare

Cable routes are agreed before a ceiling tile is lifted, and we work evenings or early mornings where a shop cannot lose trading hours. Commissioning decides whether it sounds right: levels balanced zone by zone, taps set, paging priority tested.

The zone plan, speaker layout and settings come in writing at handover, with twenty minutes for whoever runs the floor. After that it goes on a planned service visit, and since we run our own 24-hour CCTV Monitoring Control Room for monitored security, most commercial sites ring one number: 028 7087 8077.

Working with your signage and till estate

Audio rarely sits on its own. We also install digital display signage, so announcements and on-screen messages can be planned together for your premises.

Where a counter needs a call point, one button can page a single zone rather than the whole building. Network paging shares cabling and switches with everything else, so plan it with your IT and network work and your phone and broadband, not after them.

Public address system questions

Yes, as long as the system is zoned for it. Each zone takes its own source and volume, so the restaurant runs one playlist and the bar another, while paging still reaches both.

Almost always, yes. Music played where customers or staff can hear it normally needs a PPL PRS licence, arranged by the business rather than by us. It covers radio and streaming accounts too.

Yes. Recorded messages can be scheduled by day and time, so closing calls, offers and shift reminders play without anyone reaching for a microphone. A live page always overrides the schedule.

That is a design question rather than a volume question. We use horn or cabinet speakers rated for the environment, place them so speech arrives from one direction, and can add ambient sensing so the level rises while machinery runs.

No. A voice alarm is life safety equipment with its own standard, monitored circuits and battery backup, and evacuation is not a job a paging system should be given. What we fit here handles announcements, paging and music.
