Safes for homes and businesses
Start with what
you need to protect.
Jewellery, documents, digital media and cash do not all need the same protection. We match the safe to the contents, the risk, the proposed location and your insurer’s written requirements.
Choose usable internal space as well as the outside dimensions. Shelves, the largest item, access to the door and the route into the building all affect the decision.
Freestanding, wall and floor-mounted designs suit different structures. A concealed position or heavy cabinet alone is not evidence of a tested resistance grade.
Ask what the
certificate proves.
Burglary and fire resistance are tested separately. We identify the proposed model, its certified classification and installation requirements so you can confirm the specification with your insurer.
Burglary resistance
EN 1143-1 covers burglary-resistant safes. EN 14450 covers secure cabinets for lower resistance requirements. The certificate for the actual product establishes its classification.
Fire and media protection
Check the contents class and tested duration. A paper-storage rating does not automatically protect hard drives or other sensitive media. Relevant tests include EN 15659 and EN 1047-1.
Insurance and installation
Ask your insurer to accept the safe, location and fixing arrangement before purchase. A suggested contents rating is not an automatic promise of cover or a guaranteed claim payment.
Business deposits and key control
Make everyday use part of the specification.
- Deposit safes allow authorised users to make deposits without routine access to the main compartment. Lock, time-delay and anti-fishing features depend on the chosen model.
- Key safes and cabinets need suitable access control, capacity and management. Retail, hospitality and other premises have different usage and insurance requirements.
Firearm storage
Confirm the cabinet and installation with PSNI.
- Follow the conditions of your firearm certificate and confirm the proposed storage arrangement with the Police Service of Northern Ireland. A general valuables safe is not automatically suitable.
- We assess the proposed location, structure and fixing requirements. Do not assume a label or a generic standards claim guarantees that an installation will be accepted.
Plan delivery, fixing and handover together.
We assess the route in, weight, floor loading, supporting structure and the manufacturer’s anchoring instructions. Handover covers the supplied lock, authorised users and care. For servicing, moving or removing an existing safe, tell us its make, model, approximate dimensions and location before a visit is arranged.

Safe selection questions
What safe grade or cash rating do I need for insurance?
Start with your insurer’s written requirements for the proposed contents and location. We identify the safe’s certified burglary classification and fixing requirements for review. A suggested cash or valuables rating does not automatically determine your policy cover, and no fixed cash-to-valuables multiplier applies to every insurer or safe.
Does a safe need to be bolted down?
Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions and the insurer’s agreed requirements. The safe, its mass, the supporting structure and the proposed location all matter. Suitable anchoring must be assessed; do not assume that a heavy safe needs no fixing or that the same concrete anchors suit every building.
Are fire safes and security safes the same thing?
Burglary resistance and fire resistance are separate properties. Some products have certification for both. For fire protection, check the certified contents class and duration: a rating for paper is not automatically a rating for digital or magnetic media. Choose against the actual contents and risk.
What size safe should I choose?
Measure the largest items and consider usable internal dimensions, shelving, future needs and door clearance. The survey also checks the delivery route, location, weight and supporting structure. A bigger external cabinet does not necessarily give the useful internal space you expect.
Can you move or remove an old safe?
We can assess relocation or removal. Share the make/model, approximate dimensions, present location, access route and intended destination so that the weight, handling method and scope can be confirmed. Do not try to move a heavy safe without suitable planning and equipment.
The right specification, properly installed.
Advanced Overwatch is SSAIB certificated (NIRE127) specifically for Intruder Alarm Systems, Visual Surveillance Systems (VSS) and Access Control Systems. This certification does not certify safes or their fire resistance. View the SSAIB entry.
