Security Fog Systems
Advanced Overwatch designs and installs security fog systems for premises across Northern Ireland.
When an intruder breaks in, seconds decide what they take. A security fog system fills the protected space with dense, harmless fog within seconds of activation, removing visibility and forcing intruders out empty-handed. You cannot steal what you cannot see.

Security fog reduces visibility in the protected space, making it harder to locate and remove stock. It adds a physical effect to your wider intruder-alarm design.
We plan the protected volume, activation conditions and response together. The speed and extent of coverage depend on the chosen equipment, room layout and ventilation.
Example sequence, not a timing promise. Alarm signalling can run alongside fog activation; the agreed design determines the actual order and actions.
What we establish before a system goes in.
- The stock and spaces that matter. Identify what needs protection and whether fog is appropriate for the setting.
- Room volume and layout. Assess ceilings, partitions, openings and ventilation when selecting the equipment.
- People and escape routes. Plan for anyone who may be present, reduced visibility and the premises’ emergency procedures.
- Activation conditions. Record the supported signals, confirmation, safeguards and controls that authorise a discharge.
- The complete alarm connection. Check compatible interfaces and the agreed signalling and response arrangements.
- Commissioning and handover. Verify the specified operation and explain the controls, signage and staff procedures.
- After a discharge. Agree safe re-entry, ventilation, checks, reset and the correct fluid-replacement procedure.
- Ongoing readiness. Specify maintenance, consumables, battery and fault checks, and who arranges the next service.
BS EN 50131-8:2019 addresses security fog devices within the BS EN 50131 series. Where confirmed intruder or hold-up alarm conditions are part of the design, the applicable BS 8243 requirements also need consideration. The proposal identifies the actual equipment and requirements, rather than promising the same activation logic for every site.
Retail stockrooms, jewellery and electronics, tool stores and similar spaces may benefit from an assessment. Medicines, food, chemicals, sensitive equipment and occupied premises need particular consideration of the selected manufacturer’s instructions.
Advanced Overwatch is SSAIB certificated (NIRE127) specifically for Intruder Alarm Systems, Visual Surveillance Systems (VSS) and Access Control Systems. This is the stated certification scope, not a separate claim of fog-product certification.
Security fog, answered.
Is security fog safe?
Safety depends on selecting and installing a suitable system for the premises and following its manufacturer instructions. We consider occupants, reduced visibility, escape routes, ventilation, signage and staff procedures. The chosen fluid and equipment documentation need to be assessed for the intended environment; a blanket harmlessness claim is not appropriate.
How fast does it work?
The specified generator, room volume, layout, ventilation and discharge setting determine how quickly useful obscuration develops. We agree the intended coverage and commissioning checks for the actual premises. There is no universal discharge time or guarantee that theft cannot take place.
Will it go off accidentally?
The activation design defines the signals, authorisation and safeguards required before a discharge. Supported confirmation arrangements can reduce unwanted activation, but do not eliminate every possible error or fault. Staff training, documented testing and maintenance are part of the plan.
What premises does fog suit?
Fog may be considered for retail stock, jewellery or electronics, tool stores and other areas holding concentrated value. Occupied spaces, medicines, food, chemicals, sensitive equipment and special environments need a specific suitability assessment. The survey establishes what can be protected and how.
Does fog replace CCTV and alarms?
Fog is an additional layer. Detection raises an event, CCTV may provide relevant images, and the monitoring or keyholder plan determines the response where included. Fog obscures visibility; it does not guarantee prevention, protect every camera view or replace the other measures.
Is security fog safe for people and for stock?
The selected manufacturer’s safety and compatibility information must be reviewed for the actual occupants, stock, surfaces and equipment. Follow the specified ventilation and post-activation procedure. We do not promise that every fluid is suitable for every stock type or that condensation and residue are impossible in all circumstances.
What is involved in a refill after a discharge?
Follow the model’s post-activation procedure. The installer checks the discharge, fluid remaining, faults and readiness, then replaces the correct fluid container or other service items as required. Some models permit a user replacement; others require an authorised engineer. Do not assume every discharge fully empties a unit or that a sealed container can be topped up.
Do insurers recognise security fog?
Ask your insurer or broker about the proposed system before relying on it for a policy condition or discount. We can supply the specification and commissioning information for their review. Acceptance, required standards and any change in terms are the insurer’s decision.
Plan the system and the aftercare together.
The survey covers the room, stock, people and alarm connections. Your written proposal sets out the equipment, activation logic, commissioning, staff handover, maintenance and post-discharge service.
