Both figures use the identical 1-mile town-centre measure, so this comparison is like-for-like. Bigger towns naturally record more incidents.

This monthly figure places it among the HIGHER third of the 51 Northern Ireland towns with published data for that month, on the same one mile measure.

These are counts within 1-mile circles, not population-adjusted crime rates or a ranking of personal safety.

Whole-town figures sum the official police recorded crime tables for the electoral wards covering Newcastle, published by NISRA. Council figures cover the whole council area. Both are financial-year totals, separate from the monthly 1-mile measure.

The annual council series uses burglary, vehicle offences, robbery and criminal damage groupings. The monthly town-centre security-related subtotal uses a broader set of categories. These definitions differ, so do not compare the two subtotals as the same measure.

PSNI recorded 102 crimes inside a one-mile radius of Newcastle town centre, using the Home Office categories it reports against. The same measure totals 1,048 over the twelve reported months in the table above. It counts recorded crime only, so it is not a measure of how many incidents were reported, prosecuted or resolved, and it says nothing about outcomes. Our methodology page spells that out.

Honestly, not much on its own, which is why we do not count it in the security-related group. Anti-social behaviour made up 53 of the 102 crimes recorded near Newcastle centre that month. The 40 we do count as security-related are the ones a system can be designed against: violence and sexual offences, other theft, burglary, criminal damage and arson. For everything else a camera provides a dated record of what happened and where, which is what police and insurers ask for, rather than prevention.

On the same one-mile centre measure for August 2026, Newcastle recorded 102 crimes and Downpatrick recorded 128 crimes. The comparison tool above will run any two of the towns we track, and because every report uses the same circle the comparison is like for like rather than a ratio built from mismatched boundaries. What it will not tell you is which street is which, so treat it as context for a survey rather than a verdict on either town. A free survey is the practical next step: we look at the property itself, then quote for what it needs.

Discuss security systems for your property

A survey considers your premises, access and existing systems. Local crime figures provide context; they do not decide what your property needs.
