Where Should You Place Security Cameras in Your Home or Business?

Security cameras should be placed at every main entry and exit point, with additional coverage of high-value or high-risk areas. For a home that means the front door, driveway, side gates, and rear garden. For a business it means the main entrance, car park, stock or server rooms, and any loading or delivery areas. Cameras work best at a height of 2.4 to 3 metres, angled to capture faces at key approach angles without pointing into neighbouring properties.

Getting placement right before installation matters more than most people realise. A camera positioned too high loses the facial detail that makes footage useful for identification. One positioned facing into direct sunlight washes out during the hours it matters most. A camera covering the front door that misses the side gate catches nothing on the most common approach route used by opportunists.

This guide covers the practical decisions a Northern Ireland homeowner or business owner needs to make before specifying a system: where to position cameras, how high to mount them, what field of view to use, and the ICO rules that apply once cameras can see beyond your own boundary.

Start with Your Entry Points

Every property has a primary approach route and at least one secondary one. Cameras should cover both.

For a domestic property, that typically means:

  • Front door and porch. The most commonly targeted entry point. A camera positioned above the door frame or on a soffit bracket, angled slightly downward, captures anyone approaching the threshold and provides the clearest facial detail.
  • Driveway and parked vehicles. Vehicle theft and break-ins account for a significant proportion of recorded crimes. A wide-angle camera covering the full driveway, including the entrance from the road, gives both a deterrent and evidential footage.
  • Side gates and alleyways. These are the most overlooked points on a property. An alleyway leading to the rear garden with no camera coverage is the path of least resistance for anyone who has already been deterred from the front. A camera on each side access point closes the gap.
  • Rear garden, particularly outbuildings. Garden sheds and detached garages are targeted for tools and equipment. A camera covering the rear elevation, positioned on the house itself or on a bracket fixed to an outbuilding, covers this area without needing additional cabling runs.

For a business premises, the list extends further:

  • Main public entrance and reception area. Both for security and for health and safety records, knowing who entered the building and when.
  • Car park perimeter and delivery bays. These are typically where access is easiest from a public road. A camera placed at the car park entrance captures vehicle registrations; perimeter cameras cover the full sweep of the space.
  • Stock rooms, server rooms, and high-value storage areas. Internal cameras in these locations are there for a different reason: to detect or deter internal access, not external intrusion. These cameras are typically pointed at the door rather than the room contents.
  • Emergency exits. Exits that are alarmed but not monitored by camera create a gap in the audit trail. For regulated businesses, knowing who used which exit and when can be important for liability purposes.
  • Till and point-of-sale areas. Retail-specific, but important for refund disputes, theft investigations, and staff safety.

Camera Height and Angle

The standard recommendation for outdoor security cameras in a residential or commercial setting is between 2.4 and 3 metres above ground level.

Below 2.4 metres, cameras are within reach of a standing adult and are vulnerable to tampering, repositioning, or being sprayed over. Above 3 metres, you start losing the facial detail required for identification purposes, because the camera angle becomes too steep to capture a face clearly.

The sweet spot for facial identification is typically considered to be between 2 and 4 metres at the camera position, with the lens angled between 15 and 30 degrees below horizontal. This captures the face in the natural field of view without the top-of-head perspective that makes footage much less useful.

Angle matters as much as height. A common mistake is installing a camera that points along the wall of a building rather than across the approach path. A camera at the front corner of a house pointing towards the gate captures everyone approaching from the street face-on. The same camera pointing along the front wall captures very little of value.

Fixed vs Varifocal Lenses

Most residential CCTV cameras use fixed lenses, typically a 2.8mm or 4mm lens covering a wide field of view. These work well for short-range positions like above a door frame or garage entrance.

For commercial applications with longer distances to cover, or for positions where it is difficult to determine the correct focal length before installation (a warehouse floor, a large car park), a varifocal lens is more practical. The focal length is set during installation once the camera is physically in position, allowing the engineer to dial in the correct balance of coverage area and image detail.

The choice between fixed and varifocal does not significantly affect ongoing performance, but it does affect the flexibility of the installation if cameras need to be repositioned later.

Avoiding Common Placement Mistakes

A few errors appear consistently on site surveys of existing systems.

Cameras facing into the sun. Cameras positioned on south-facing walls or facing east or west can be blinded by direct sunlight during key hours. Modern cameras handle backlight better than older equipment did, but the problem does not disappear. Where possible, orient cameras so they face away from the prevailing sun direction, or specify a camera with adequate wide dynamic range for the position.

Cameras too close to IR floodlights. Many outdoor cameras include built-in infrared LEDs for night vision. If an external floodlight is mounted close to the camera, the floodlight can overpower the camera’s own night vision and cause washout in the image. Position cameras and lights separately, or specify a camera compatible with the existing lighting setup.

Overlooking internal coverage on a commercial site. External cameras are visible and provide deterrence. Internal cameras provide evidence. A site with comprehensive external coverage but no internal cameras has a gap that becomes apparent the first time a disputed internal incident occurs.

Cameras with no overlap. Each camera should have a small overlap with its neighbour so that there is no gap in coverage. A system where each camera covers a discrete zone with no shared area means a person moving between zones cannot be followed through the footage.

ICO and GDPR Rules for Camera Placement

If your cameras can capture images of people in a public area, or in a neighbouring property, data protection law applies to the footage. This includes the majority of domestic front-door cameras that can see the pavement or shared access, and all commercial CCTV covering car parks, public entrances, and adjacent roads.

The key obligations for most homeowners and businesses in Northern Ireland are:

Signage. Clearly visible signs must be displayed wherever cameras can capture images of people who have not explicitly consented to being filmed. The sign does not need to be large, but it must be visible before a person enters the surveilled area.

Data retention. The ICO guidance recommends that footage is retained only as long as necessary for the purpose it was captured. For standard domestic and commercial installations, 28 days is the typical default. Footage relating to a reported incident should be exported and retained separately before the loop overwrites it.

Access to footage. Footage should only be accessed by individuals who have a legitimate reason to view it, and access should be logged where technically possible. Sharing footage with third parties (including police) without the appropriate lawful basis can create a compliance issue.

Camera angle. Cameras should not be deliberately positioned to film neighbouring properties, gardens, or windows. Where incidental capture is unavoidable due to the layout of the property, this should be noted and, where possible, mitigated through the use of privacy masking on the camera itself.

Does a home CCTV camera need planning permission in Northern Ireland?

In most cases, domestic CCTV cameras do not require planning permission. Cameras mounted on the exterior of a house and pointing onto your own property are treated as permitted development under current Northern Ireland planning rules, as long as the camera does not significantly alter the appearance of a listed building and is not installed in a conservation area where additional restrictions may apply. If your property is listed or in a designated conservation area, check with the relevant local council before installation. Planning considerations aside, ICO rules about footage of public spaces still apply regardless of whether permission is needed.

How long should CCTV footage be kept?

For most domestic and commercial CCTV systems, the ICO recommends retaining footage for no longer than necessary for the purpose it was captured, with 28 days being the widely adopted standard for systems covering general areas. CCTV in higher-risk environments, regulated industries, or where footage is retained for evidential reasons may justify longer periods, but this should be documented in a data protection policy. Footage relating to a specific incident should be exported and preserved separately before the recording loop overwrites it, which typically happens automatically after the retention period ends. Can I access my CCTV footage remotely?

Most modern IP camera systems support remote access via a smartphone app or web browser, allowing you to view live feeds and recorded footage from anywhere with an internet connection. The camera or NVR (network video recorder) connects to your broadband router, and the app authenticates over an encrypted connection. It is important to set a strong, unique password for remote access accounts, as systems left with factory default credentials are a common target. Your installer should configure remote access and demonstrate how to use it as part of the commissioning process. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) published its CCTV and surveillance camera guidance to help operators understand their obligations under UK data protection law. It covers the legal basis for operating CCTV, what signage is required, how long footage should be retained, who can access it, and when footage can be shared with third parties such as the police. The full document is available on the ICO website and applies to any camera system that captures images of identifiable individuals, whether it is a single doorbell camera or a multi-site commercial network.

Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA 2018)
The DPA 2018 is the UK’s primary data protection legislation, incorporating and supplementing the requirements of UK GDPR following the UK’s departure from the European Union. It treats CCTV footage of identifiable individuals as personal data, which means it must be handled in accordance with the data protection principles: collected for a specific, legitimate purpose; not retained longer than necessary; kept secure against unauthorised access; and made available to data subjects on request through a Subject Access Request. For most CCTV operators, compliance with the ICO’s guidance above is sufficient to meet DPA 2018 obligations.

UK GDPR
The UK General Data Protection Regulation is the retained EU GDPR framework as it applies in the United Kingdom, now maintained separately from the EU version. It sets out the lawful bases for processing personal data and the rights of individuals whose data is processed. For CCTV operators, the most relevant lawful basis is usually legitimate interests, which requires a balancing test demonstrating that the operator’s interest in operating the cameras outweighs the privacy interests of the individuals filmed. This test is particularly relevant for cameras that capture public spaces or neighbouring properties.
