PAT Testing (Portable Appliance Testing)

Employers have a legal duty under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to ensure that electrical equipment used by employees is safe. PAT testing is the recognised method of demonstrating compliance:

• What is tested — All portable and transportable electrical appliances, including computers, kettles, power tools, extension leads and phone chargers.
• Testing frequency — Depends on the environment and equipment type. Offices typically require annual testing; construction sites and industrial settings require more frequent checks (3–6 months).
• Certification — Each item tested receives a pass/fail label and a unique reference number. We provide a full register of all tested equipment along with formal certificates for your records and insurance purposes.
• Failed items — Any equipment that fails testing is immediately labelled as unsafe and removed from service, with a written report detailing the fault.

Fixed Wire Testing (EICR)

An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is an inspection and test of the fixed electrical wiring in a building. It is a legal requirement in many circumstances:

• Frequency — Commercial premises should be inspected at least every 5 years. Some sectors (e.g. swimming pools, petrol stations, construction sites) require more frequent testing.
• Landlord obligations — Landlords in Northern Ireland have a duty to ensure electrical installations are safe for tenants. An up-to-date EICR provides evidence of compliance.
• What is inspected — Consumer units, distribution boards, wiring, earthing, bonding, circuit protection devices and socket outlets. The inspection identifies any deterioration, damage, defects or non-compliance with current regulations.
• Classification codes — Any defects found are categorised using codes C1 (danger present), C2 (potentially dangerous) and C3 (improvement recommended). We provide clear guidance on remedial action required.
