Video Management Solutions – Which should I choose?

Digital Surveillance Systems are Central Management System (CMS) / Video Management Systems (VMS) which have a wide range of features and functions within video surveillance. The DSS manages IP cameras and recorders and is able to connect to third-party cameras through the standard ONVIF protocol.

Benefits of a VMS (Video Management Solution)

A VMS is a valuable central portal which is used to manage all video surveillance channels and devices, which includes NVRs, DVRs, IP cameras, thermal cameras, facial recognition cameras, PTZs, access control devices, intercoms, and video wall devices.

In order to set up the DSS and add devices; IP addresses, set up user permissions and port-forward to the system, you would be required to follow basic networking protocols. Once the devices have been added, the interface is very user-friendly to navigate. Just a few clicks will give you live views and recorded playback. A thumbnail search function lets you quickly identify and search for video clips.

Which VMS is most suitable for me?

DSS Express S

DSS Express S is a free, software-only DSS, which is best for residential and SMB applications, as it only allows one client to manage the devices. Another option for DSS Express is the DHI-DSS4004-S2 hardware system with Linux based software.

DSS Pro manages multiple locations, such as retail chains and law enforcement or video monitoring services.  There are two versions of the DSS Pro available. The DSS7016-S2 is a hardware system preloaded with Linux-based software, which manages up to 512 devices per server and is scalable therefore lets you add multiple systems. The DSS Pro software only version is license-based, therefore customers can choose features and add on modules in order to meet their requirements.  Multiple users can use the DSS Pro and multiple levels of permissions can be applied.

Benefits of the Linux-based DSS Pro

Linux-based DSS Pro (DHI-DSS7016DR-S2) is very beneficial as it has room for expandable video storage, with fifteen pluggable hard drives via iSCSI with support up to 200TB. If more storage is required an additional Enterprise Video Storage (EVS) device can be added onto the DSS system.
